I'm looking to locate where my Great Grandfather x3 is buried. His name is Samuel Chapman. He was born in Loudoun Scotland in 1781. He married in 1806 at Loudoun Parish to a Helen Findly/Finley, born 1785 in Galston. He was a farmer and assumed lived in or around Loudoun till his death around 75 years of age. 1856? I guess I'm trying to find what cemeteries are in the area that might have records that I can search. His son Samuel W Chapman was born in Darvel 1816 and came to america in 1841. Thanks for any help out there! Allison

He does not appear on either the 1841 or 1851 Scottish censuses. Are you sure about his birthyear/age at death?
-
In my information and it says Samuel Chapman was born 1781 Loudoun, Scotland. I don't have an exact date of death but it mentions that he died at around 75 years of age. Samuel & his wife Helen were both from small farming towns a couple of miles away, Loudoun and Galston. I have more information on his son Samuel William Chapman who is buried here in the US. He was born in Darvel, Scotland 1816. I'm still looking through papers to see if I can locate more information. I found Samuel & Helen's Marriage certificate on Scotlandspeople.com I havent viewed it yet but it may have more information. Thanks for your help!

Helen does not appear on the 1841 or 1851 either and there are no Chapman deaths in Loudoun pre 1855 on Scotlands People.
Any possibility that the parents went to the US in 1841 with son Samuel?
-
Papers say his son was native of glasglow and came to America with his family in 1841. His Father also a native of Scotland and there died at about 75 years of age. Its possible he may not have been in Loudoun when he passed but a different area around there? Buried in The family plot here is his son & wife along with his child (son) and wife. I'll keep searching!

Yes he would be my Great Grandfather x2. He's buried here in the US close to where we live. His Father Samuel Grandfather x3 was born in 1781 Loudoun Scotland. He was married in Scotland and remained ther till his death. Which I'm yet to figure out. I found his marriage certificate and still need to view it.

Looks to me that what I have posted may be Samuel Jnrs Parents and Samuel Snr was born Ireland.
Where does the info of Loudon as Samuel Snrs birth come from?
If no one has Samuel Snr 1841/1851/1861 Census then pob is impossible to establish.
Trish :)

And James from 1841 Census;
James Chapman 38
Mary Chapman 48
George Gilmour 20

My brother prepared our family tree, i will talk to my brother. It says Samuel Sr is listed as born 1781 in Loudoun. That's All. Marriage certificate lists marriage to Helen in loudoun 1806. Son Samuel Jr born in Darvel (buried in Elgin) marriage certificate correct, says married in Cadder. Its on scotlands people site. Still need to pay to view marriage certificates.
-
Ok, have a talk with your Brother and also see if he has Samuels 1887 Illinois Death Cert.
Trish :)

I'm waiting for more info from my Brother. Hoping he has names of Samuel Chapman Sr's children, so I can narrow it down to the correct family. I found papers, someone recorded family history when they talked to my great grandfathers youngest son. He states that Samuel Sr and Samuel Jr were born in Ireland and came over to Scotland and notes the family were from a place called Airdrie near Glasgow. He says his father in the late 1800's visted cousins in Airdrie. Samuel Jr. married Margaret Spittal and moved to the US. He was the only child to do so but doesnt list the siblings names. So seems like I'm getting more correct info. Since you're being of help to me I have another question, this on my husbands side. His great grandfather x4 George Faile came to New York from Scotland. So we are looking for info on his father great grandfather x5 George Faile. Hopefully residence/burial info. He was born 1749 Symington/Lamington Lanarkshire Scotland died 1802. Reading he probably died there because his daughter was heir to his land. Reason I'm searching for grandpa Chapman x3 and grandpa Faile x5 is to maybe plan a trip to Scotland. Would like to visit where they lived hopefully to find family & burial spots. Please no hurry to respond and thanks again! George Faile x5 spouse was Jonet Mochrie.
-
So it looks like the 1841/1851 Census I posted is the correct ones for Samuel Snr.
As for the Faile Family it may be best to start a new query on the Lanarkshire Board for them.
Although I only have 1 Scottish connection in my Family Tree I envy you in going there!

If you have credits on Scotlandspeople it would be worth looking up this from Anc.
1861 Census
1Society Stree,
Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire
Caniech Chapman, 62, Head, Mar, Labourer, born Ireland
Mary Ann Chapman, 52, Wife, Mar, born England
Joseph Chapman, 35, Son, Labourer, born Lountown, Ayrshire***
David Stevenson, 21, Stepson*, Cotton Power Loom Weaver, born Maybole, Ayrshire
I am very sure this is Samuel. As there is no image on Anc I cant check anything.
I know Samuel age is out but my gut tells me its him which means he remarried to a Widow.
Familysearch has this Marriage;
12 June 1853, Barony, Lanark
Samuel CHAPMAN to Mary Ann SMITH
Remarried under her maiden name?
