You "believe" or you have documentary proof of this person changing their name?

My advice is to follow the records of this individual person back not scatter searching for a surname otherwise your brick wall will continue and accept that EVERYONE  hits a brick wall and often means you are looking in the wrong area and/or have not followed the record trail correctly.

If you are asking for help finding Felix please can you give a bit more information eg date of birth (or at least a guess) When and where do you last have him?

It is highly unlikely there was ever a document of official/legal name change (i.e. deed poll). It would not be in any way uncommon, nor was it illegal, for him to change the spelling of his name upon immigration or at some other point of his choosing, without any sort of official record.

But unless you definitely have him on a record as Masse, it wasn't necessarily a change at all, because there is also a French surname, Macé.

Port of Dover arrival 1844 Felix Maisse with Pierce ?, father shown as Pierce Maisse on marriage, but doesn't look like Maisse as a surname on this passport

Richard Bowden widower of Twickenham father John Bowden
married
19/11/1851
at Holy Trinity Richmond upon Thames
to
Elizabeth Maisse widow of Twickenham father John Barker

So husband Felix must have either died between these years in England, or returned to France and  died there

PS John Please come back and let us know if we are on the right track

Why not post what you have to avoid duplication and save people from looking up stuff you already have?

wHY NOT POST WHAT YOU HAVE TO AVOID

there is a french or belgian site which may help, that is if they originated from there and moved to scotland french revolution or ww1/2you might find people researching the same name over there. moving forward instead of going backwards most of belgiums records were destroyd during ww1. ww2
but families over there still manage to run their trees somehow.maybe bob knows which ones may help.

I agree with you Hallmark, it is a waste of time if they already have the info, I,  like others most likely have sat for hours trying to find something, what little I found he already seems to have so I was no help there

If they hailed from France, which seems likely I think perhaps it should be on a different board

Reading back I think John Mace wanted to go back further

I think the problem here is that John has asked for two different things

In his first post he says he is looking for Felix Masse (or a variation of the name) in France or Belgium. Then in his second post he asks, "when did john felix  the father die and when did john felix the son die and what happened to the brother "

It is very difficult to work out what he already knows and what he wants.

You state you "have all that" - have your read all of the replies ?

You were looking for what happened to the brother Alfred - see my reply#8 -have you thoroughly checked that burial out??

You are wanting to go further back - you don't seem to mention that Felix' father's name is given as Pierce on his marriage record???

Suz

I have edited this as I had mistakenly named Mr Bizouard as Felix when his name is Pierce - could this be the Pierce who arrived at a later date 1844 with Felix Maisse??

Have you checked all of this out?
