I have a Walter Thomas Stearn who died 8th October 1957 & his wife Mary Hetta Stearn who died in 1955. They had a daughter Florence Mary (Scholer) who died 24th May 1951 & wondered if they are all buried together.
I was wondering if there is someone going to the Waverley Cemetery in Sydney? that might be able to check if there is a headstone if there is to photograph & email it to me.
I have contacted the Waverley Cemtery who tell me Walter Thomas is buried Allotment 2622 Extension A, Division Select, Section 6.
They have also told me the info below.
We can certainly provide allotment maps which can help locate particular sites, as well as photographs of allotments, however there is a small fee for these services.
We cannot advise whether there is a monumental marker for this allotment, however, for a fee of $25.00 Per allotment (0.6% surcharge for credit card), we can arrange for photographs of the allotment to be taken and emailed to you. Please note, that we cannot guarantee there will be a memorial or inscription on the allotment.
And for a fee of A$10.25 (0.6% surcharge for credit card) per allotment / or deceased when documentation is requested (in instances of multiple searches we can combine the information, if they are in the same section, which reduces the fee as multiple maps would not be required). The fee includes completion of the requested search and the supply of cemetery record, section and allotment maps which will include the provision of allotment details regarding the requested individual(s).
I hope I am not asking to big a request
Many thanks for any assistance
Ellen from Perth

There are no other Stearn with a headstone inscription, but that doesn't mean his wife isn't buried with him. No Scholer on the disc.

Thank you Cando & Jamjar.
I knew he was a retired British Navy Captain & lived in Vaucluse so thought he might have had a headstone.

I have given you a transcription of his headstone/plaque.

Ellen you asked for someone to photograph a possible headstone at Waverley and from the transcriptions of headstones compiled up to 2002, there is a headstone/marker on Walter's grave. You still haven't received a response for someone to photograph it for you. Hopefully someone a kind soul will help you. ;D
Best of luck

Ellen I should have thought of this before. You can post a photo request on this website for Waverley Cemetery. I did check previously to see if a photo of the STEARN grave was there. Sadly no.

There may not be a headstone.
If you put the details into austcemindex.com it confirms he is at Waverley Cemetery but says
'0 inscriptions' which I would take to mean no headstone.
But I guess you can still photograph the grave, at least.

There must be a headstone, as there is an inscription which was transcribed and recorded onto the disc I have.
You can read the inscription in Reply #1

Interesting. I wonder how long ago the CD was made, I..e. how long ago was that headstone viewed? Sometimes they 'disappear' through vandalism, etc.
I did wonder, why the site didn't confirm grave location etc. when I put the info in. Maybe it was malfunctioning? Didn't seem to get the depth of information usually available ??? ??? ???
Let's hope the headstone is still there, then.

I can't find Walter STEARN on Austcemindex and if you are searching his name with the cemetery it will bring up 0 inscriptions ie no entry. Try searching his name without the cemetery and nothing. Only 229 transcription entries for Waverley cemetery. I think you have misinterpreted the results.
Inscriptions to 2002 on the CD published by the SAG.

Agree, Cando. 0 inscriptions to me means no headstone inscribed/ transcribed , i.e. he's not in the 229 that have been transcribed. Did SAG publish a Cd with only 229 inscriptions??
Waverley Cemetery has already confirmed to the OP that he is in that cemetery. It's a huge cemetery, from my memory, and from some general photos on another site I found, very crowded. Remember that Austcemindex is an index of inscribed/transcribed headstones, not a record of all 'inhabitants'. Though you found an inscription somewhere? Was that from the SAG CD?
All a bit strange ???

No problem Ellen :)

Dawn M I don't know what's strange. You appear to have misunderstood the result from Auscemindex. There isn't an entry for him at Waverley ie 0 It's obvious that volunteers have started to photograph and transcribe the photos of headstones at Waverley to the online database.
My resource shows there is a plaque or headstone with an inscription. All on the thread.
Thank you maddy for helping Ellen. What goes round comes round ;D
