Title: Finding the death of Ellen WRIGHT
Post by: tigger88 on Friday 29 September 17 03:19 BST (UK)
Hello everyone
I am still on the hunt for the death of my great great grandmother.   She was born in Antrim, Ireland in 1838, came to Australia as an assisted immigrant with her sister Mary, married John WRIGHT IN 1859 and proceeded to 'go on the road' with him while he laboured at building the railways in Victoria and NSW.
She had 5 sons (1 died aged 10 mths) and 2 daughters. The last son Denis was born in Albury NSW (I do have his birth certificate) in 1878 but I cannot find anything at all about him after this date.
Plus I cannot find Ellen either.    Husband John died in 1903 but his death certificate does not mention his son Denis or his wife.
Any help greatly appreciated.  I have tried the usual suspects ie.  NSW and Victoria bdms, and family search.  Thank you in advance. :)

If you put her name into RYERSON with date range 1878-1940 it gives 17 results, some of which obviously could not be her because of their age, but there are a few possibles.
Including one in 1880, plus one in 1887 aged 49 at Sydney, and one in 1882 at Narrabri, NSW aged 41.

Might be worth looking at
And you can search for those on TROVE, yourself.

This quote from a previous thread

John died in 1902 in Sydney, and his son John Jnr was the informant.  He did not name all the children, Denis is not mentioned at all which makes me wonder if he died very young.  Haven't been able to find a death at all in NSW or Victoria for him.

Even if Dennis died as an infant, John junior, the informant on the DC would have known about him if the family were all living together.
John would have been 11 or 12 years old at that time, so well able to remember.

What year precisely did John WRIGHT go to Albury?

Had you considered Dennis was not John WRIGHT's child?

Many a woman has filled in the father column falsely ;D

You have said (somewhere) that she herself  was the informant of the birth.
Was the child present?

It reads as if a section of the notice was left out in the printing.

I'm sure he was not the father of John Junior's friends. ::)

Perhaps meant to be "his dearly loved father"

:)  I typed it up and had double take as I typed !  but significantly, if that's the right WRIGHT then he was buried at St Thomas C of E, and I seem to recall somewhere that Rookwood was mentioned.

Lane Cove/St Leonards/Artarmon/Chatswood are all nearby to each other.  :)  Rookwood was a fair distance (and across the Harbour, long before the Bridge was built) from those northern suburbs.

Wonder if OP has been in touch with the cemetery regarding that interment.

Significant other may be with or nearby ;D

From previous thread.

I think John is buried at Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney, but as I don't have the info with me at the moment, it is going from memory. He died in Lane Cove, Sydney in 1902.

Lesley was a way from her notes at the time of replying.

Just realised the post says: Husband John died in 1903 but his death certificate does not mention his son Denis or his wife.

There are two at Rookwood:

JOHN WRIGHT 76 8-7-1903 Zone A Presbyterian 06D 6883

JOHN S WRIGHT 66 9-5-1903 Zone B 04 778

The Ellen WRIGHT who died in April 1887 does NOT seem to be the right Mrs WRIGHT.

My transcription
St Stephens C of E, Newtown Burials

Ellen WRIGHT
Abode: Wynyard Square, Sydney
Died 27 April 1887,  buried 29 April 1887
Aged 55 years

NSW BDM has #679/1887
Deducing death date from their search engine option gives 27 April 1887
Ellen WRIGHT, parents as Thomas and Mary.  Death registered Sydney.

Here's the live link to Ryerson Index :  http://www.ryersonindex.org/ and here's the 1887 mentions:

Sadly
Ellen, beloved wife of Horatio G A Wright, died 27 April 1887 and then their adult daughter Annie died a fortnight later....  :(

This is clearly not your Ellen, wife of John
