My aunt's maiden name was Mowat, her parents were William Mowat and Bridget McGuckin. William's father was David "Mott". This was a spelling error that went on for a few generations. (Just another possibility for you to look at.)

Thanks Janice
Might be worth looking into the "Mott" variation.

Just for info ... there is one other family name that is a variant of yours "Mouatt" in the 1851 index for Glasgow ... . living in Calton you have
Janet Mouatt aged 53
Margaret aged 25
Mary aged 23
and William aged 15 .....
a slightly different spelling but possibly linked in somewhere along the line.

Elaine,
Just found two more variations in my Aunt's line. "Mote" and "Moat".

Hi Elaine
I searched Scotland's People website for births & marriage in the parish registers.
I found:
Marriage:
Laurence Mowat
Married: 18th November 1825
Isabella Watt St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh
Births:
Isabella Mouat 14th October 1826
St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh
Father: Lawrence Mouat
Mother: Isabella Watt
Janet Mouat 31st December 1828
St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh
Father: Laurence Mouat
Mother: Isabella Watt
Lawrence Mouat 10th February 1831
St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh
Father: Lawrence Mouat
Mother: Isabella Watt
James Mowat 24th May 1833
St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh
Father: Lawrence Mowat
Mother: Isabel Watt
Margaret Mouat 19th July 1835
Barony, Glasgow
Father: Lawrence Mouat
Mother: Isabella Watt
John Mowat 18th March 1838
Barony, Glasgow
Father: Laurence Mowat
Mother: Isabella Watt
William Mouat 2nd August 1840
Barony, Glasgow
Father: Lawrence Mouat
Mother: Isabella Watt
These were all I could find for Mouat or Mowat before 1854 with mother Isabella Watt. I tried other varients, but could find nothing else. I even checked for different spellings of mother's name.
