Title: Obituary for WILLIAMS from Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog
Post by: Rowlandson on Thursday 14 September 17 21:01 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone,

I hope someone might be able to advise me how I go about locating an obituary for someone who passed away in 1960 & for his wife who passed away 1978. Really don't know where to begin.

The obituaries which I'm after are for a,

William Owen Williams, of Utica House, Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog who passed away on 14th January 1960.
&
Sarah Emily (Sally) Williams, of Utica House, Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog who passed away on 25th March 1978.

I'm hoping one of the above obituaries might record the whereabouts of their grave. ???

Many Thanks,

Rowlandson  ::)

Hi, William Owen Williams and Sarah were my great grandfather and grandmother! What are your connections with them?

Hi Ffiongwyn & DCB,

Thank you both for taking the time to reply to my request.

As you can see I initially posted my message back in September 2017, and as a result I have since furthered my family history research and located their grave at Mynwent Capel Bethesda in Blaenau Ffestiniog, along with the grave of their children buried in 1921. Together with their said obituaries but I am most grateful to you both for your help.

Perhaps I can explain how I'm connected to your Great Grandparents Ffiongwyn.

Sarah Emily Williams (Nee Davies) 1883 - 1878 was a first cousin to my grandmother Dora Barlow 1901 - 1993.

Sallie's (as my grandmother called Sarah) father John Davies (of Caerwys, Flintshire)ca 1852 - 1929 and Dora's mother Elizabeth Davies 1860 - 1914 were siblings. The children of David Davies & Elizabeth Beck.

Hope this explains my connections

I was told that Sarah had 10 siblings, all girls except for the last who was male, do you have further information about her family?

Hi Again Ffiongwyn,

Not sure if Sarah had 10 siblings or if there were 10 children in total ? I have,

Margaret Susannah ca 1874  - 1955
Ann ca 1877
Jane ca 1879
Mary ca 1881 - 1928
Sarah Emily (Sallie) 1883 - 1978
Eva 1886 - 1910
Amelia 1888 - 1919 (Sallie looked after her son Philip, after Amelia's death, sadly Philip died in 1921, and is buried in Bethesda Cemetery)
Annie ca 1893 - 1910
David John 1894 -
Elizabeth 1897 - 1932

Would be very grateful if you could add any additional info on any of the above,

Hope this helps  :)

Thanks Ffiongwyn.

Robert Beck 1799 - 1857 (Salies Great Grandfather) was Captain of the Point of Ayr Lifeboat.

His death certificate states we was
'Accidentally drown by the upsetting of the Point Of Air Lifebooat'
He died in January 1857 but his body wasn't washed ashore until the March of the same year. He is buried in St Bridgets Churchyard, West Kirby.

He married Jane Beck (His brother Thomas's widow) her maiden name was Jane Little, on 13th March 1822 at St Peters Parish Church, Liverpool.

In our Fourth Edition of Monday we published the particulars of a melancholy accident which occurred on Sunday off Rhyl, when the Point of Ayr lifeboat was upset, and the whole of the crew, 13 in number, met with a watery grave.
All except four were married men, with large families. Three or four men got upon the bottom of the boat after she upset, but they, were soon washed. The boat and crew were proceeding to the sucoour of a brigantine sunk off Pensarn, Abergele, but the Rhyl lifeboat had previously succeeded in saving the crew, 14 men, who were on the rigging.
The boat, botom
up, and nine of the bodies, were washed ashore, and picked up near the Voryd station.
The following are the names
of the crew appointed to the ill-fated lifoboat :-Robert Beck, aged 37, master; John Sherlock, John Blyddon, aged 38; John Owens, aged 37; Joseph Davies, aged 30;
David Davies, aged 25; Thos. Roberts, aged 28; Richard Roberts Elward Palia, Bobe; Robert Roberts.....
THE
LIVERPOOL MERCURY, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1857.

Thank You Ffiongwyn,

We seemed to have followed each others footsteps with our research  :)

My branch of the Beck family gets a little bit complicated, due to cousin marriages.

Robert Beck & (Jane Little) are my 3 x great grandparents
&
Thomas Beck (Roberts Brother) & Jane Little (Same Jane as above) are my 4 x great grandparents

All very confusing  :), plus not much variation in Christian names down the generations.

Interesting! Do you have the family tree mapped out? My Uncle John has a version of our side, might be easier to share on email? ffiongwyn@outlook.com

Hi Ffiongwyn,

Thank you very much for your email, I do have most of my researched mapped out, but so far have not put that much on line. But would be very willing to share my research with you.

The photograph is of my 2 x Great Grandfather Thomas Matthias, but sadly not related to Davies/Barlow/Beck line
