Apologies if I'm posting in the wrong place - I think this William may well be the big brother of my grandmother who passed away in 2006 - I have his death cert confirming place of birth as Scotland (which makes me almost certain it's him as he is the only William Mitchell born on that date in Scotland) but unfortunately he and his son's name are so common that it's not helping me much - I am on a bit of a quest to track down and know more about what happened to my gran's siblings who ended up scattered around a bit - I can see he was a retired docks worker, and he lived in Falmouth - the Falmouth council website tells me he was buried in Falmouth cemetery and I am wondering if anyone lives near there or would be able to see what the inscription on his headstone says for me (I live in Edinburgh!) feel free to redirect me - I have the gravestone location in the cemetery if anyone can help
-
Have you confirmed with the cemetery office that a headstone exists?
-
I have the burial record and the location of the grave, it says 'private burial' and gives a code for location but no, I guess it doesn't actually say a headstone - do you think I should do that first? I don't know what 'private burial' means in relation to anything else. It says he's buried in a purchased grave, so not scattered ashes I don't think. He was Catholic I think and it says he's buried in the church area of the burial ground with service performed by Father D Smith. Maybe I should email the cemetery office first, do you think?

Is this the burial record you are looking at :-\
Grave Falmouth / PB / J / 18
Date of Burial 29/10/2004
It gives portion of burial ground buried as 'Church'
-
yes rosie99 it is.

The address on the burial book is different to the one you have given (I won't give it here). Have you looked at electoral registers for the address in case there is still family there
-
sorry yes I see that - was getting mixed up with the two addresses on the cert. Have removed the first one from my post. I can see his son's home was sold a couple of years after his dad died. Haven't checked electoral registers for his own address at this point, looks like its a council flat. I haven't done that before - do you know where I would find electoral registers? I think I was just assuming given his age that there wouldn't be family still there but I guess I could be wrong... I have found his son on a company directors list for a Cornwall company but he retired from that role in 2002 and so not really sure where to go from here..

wow! thanks so much rosie, have messaged you back! Do you mind telling me how you did that?! THere is clearly so much I still don't know how to do lol
-
You really should ask the cemetery office first, just in case there isn't a headstone and someone has a wasted journey.

thanks dawnsh I will do that

Electoral registers are available to view online though many people 'opt out' so will not appear on them. 192.com also FindMyPast have fairly recent registers
