Title: Need help dating this please? Photo taken in Watford, England
Post by: mysteries on Wednesday 06 September 17 03:21 BST (UK)
Hello

Would love help to date this photo please? All I know is that is was taken in Watford, England. It's either a photo of one of my great aunts (who died in 1963 aged 86), or of my great grandmother (who died in 1935 aged 75). There is nothing written on the back of the photo that might identify who it is or when it was taken.

Would be grateful for any help.

Kind regards
M

Oops. How did this lovely photo slip down unnoticed? Not much good at dating but to me it looks like a 70 year-old in late 1940s. The experts should be along soon to give you a better idea. Meanwhile I've tidied up the photo a little.
Cheers, Peter.

As you have the original, is it possible, maybe with a magnifying glass to make out the larger print and photo in the newspaper beside her? Its just tantalisingly too pixelated to make out in the copy.

Good morning,

I would say it could be anytime from the 40s to early 60s. We had a lady who lived up the road from us in an isolated cottage. She dressed like that and still had gas lighting up to 1964 when the cottage was finally condemmed.

I would say it looks early to mid-1950s - so it would be your great aunt.

I would agree with Gadget based on photos of my Grandma from that era.

The light is a gas light which doesn't help date the picture. When my parents got married late 1947 all the street were they bought a house had gas lighting. My parents had it taken out and became all electric. The next door house wasn't converted until 1961 after the old lady who lived there went to live with her daughter.

The style of the dress looks like 40s/50s.  It's not wartime as no blackout curtains. From what you have said about your great grandmother and great aunt's dates I believe it to be your great aunt like everyone else.

Hi

The shape of the arm of the chair, to me, points to the mid-late 1950's.

The lampshade looks does not look professional but "hobbyist".
Weaving your own was a hobby around that time?

Hello All

Thank you all so very much for your help :-)

I had thought it might have been my great aunt, but your expertise and kind comments have helped my believe it is her with absolute certainty that it is her.

Cheers
