I am wanting to confirm the birth-date and birthplace for William Oakes born circa 1834, supposedly in Cork City, Cork, Ireland and if possible his parents details.
William Oakes (ex Cumberland Regiment - convicted of striking his superior and of desertion), transported to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania) on Lord Dalhousie, arriving 14 August 1852.
William Oakes married Margaret McGregor (also a convict) in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 18 May 1857.
William and Margaret came to sad ends - he was convicted of her murder in 1886.
William then died in Hobart at the Campbell St Gaol in 1887 of pneumonia.
The son of Margaret (but possibly not William), George Henry Oakes joined the police force and was in charge of the water police in Hobart. George had a son, Walter George Oakes who became Commissioner of Police in Tasmania.

After reviewing some other documents it would seem that William Oakes was actually born circa 1829 and was from Derby, England. He was sentenced to 10 years in a Dublin Court and transported to Tasmania on the ship "Lord Dalhousie".
