Title: Missing James BOOTH
Post by: IanBInOz on Monday 14 August 17 05:15 BST (UK)
G'day all, I am searching for records in connection with the marriage of John Robinson BOOTH of Stockport Cheshire to Mary Ann Brook of Halifax.
They were listed in the immigration records as married in 1840 when they came to Australia but I am unsure exactly when or where they were married.  According to the immigration records, they had James, age 4 with them on the ship and his native place is said to be Halifax, so they may well have married there.  I cant find record of James' birth although I do recall stumbling on a post which I now can't find in which the poster said she/he had found a child of this marriage with a biblical name (maybe changed to James later?)

All assistance gratefully received
Cheers, Ian B

James was 4 on 11th 1840 so his bd is 11th March 1836.  I have found the records suggested previously but they don't fit.  They travelled to Australia in 1840. Mary gave birth to a girl on board in November 1840.

James was 4 on 11th 1840 so his bd is 11th March 1836.

The age of 4 on the ship's manifest means he could have been anywhere from 4 years 1 day to 4 years and 364 days old. I am sure they didn't ask for his age in years, months and days, just asked "How old is James?" and the answer was 4 years.

in fact they did.  I have a doc which includes (exactly) "James 4y 11 Mar 1840".  The Bounty scheme that they came to Oz on calculated the bounty (ie how much had to be paid for the voyage) based on the age of the person.  So it was important

by the way, their religion is listed as "prot" ie protestant.  I don't think that was classified as non conformist or that they were Wesleyans.  I would send you the doc but I understand from this sites rules that that isn't kosher

Having looked again Susannah's age is 1 week old so born towards the end of the voyage.

Wesleyans and nonconformists were breakaway groups from the established protestant church (according to Wikipedia)  :)
Is it an Australian document that states James' birth date as 11 March 1836? Does the column heading have Age or Birthdate as the heading?
I still am inclined to read this " "James 4y 11 Mar 1840" as meaning he was anywhere between 4 years 1 day and 4 years 364 days old on the 11 March when his age was recorded.

The dates on the entitlement certificates are usually the date that the person will be the age that they have stated, so James will be aged 4 on 11 March 1840.

You can see all the information that was recorded here:
