Would anyone care to date this picture which I can narrow down a bit! It has to be after 1902 but before 1948 when the pub burned down. Many thanks

Which is Mary Ann Bell - is it the one on the right? I see you asked or info about her on another thread re Ebchester.
PS - if possible, can you scan at the largest resolution - it might show up her ring finger. I note that you didn't know if she was married.

I have tried that! I couldn't be sure if there is a ring there or not and I can't get a better resolution picture. The person who sent me the picture said she was the one dressed in black. I have been told that she was there in the early part of the century and that she might be the daughter or daughter in law of a previous landlord. Another thinks it was just before the pub burned down making it 1948 but North Eastern Breweries merged with Vaux in 1927 so that sign would probably be gone soon after that.

I've not found much yet but I've relatives the Charlton's listed on various census around turn of 20th century. There's a link there to the Chelmsford in Ebchester.

I have quite a bit about the Charlton family - including a couple of pictures. It will take a while to dig it all out but please bear with me and I will post it for you.
The Chelmsford was built in about 1896 but tread carefully when you are researching - because that was not the original pub. The original was just along the street at No 2 Front Street and was in operation for many years before the present building.
My wife's aunt and uncle lived in that house for decades and they had a room they called the cellar. It was on the ground floor and totally separate from what is now the living room/dining room area. He always said the house used to be a pub but nobody believed him. Recent evidence has proved him right - there was a licence issued at this address and it was in the same name as the first landlord of the present Chelmsford.

I'm visiting the area in a week's time for a few days to do some family history research. More than a bit disorganised but both the station hotel and the Chelmsford linked to family via census info.
Would be fascinated to see your research and photos you mentioned. Photos of wider family very thin on the ground. If you could post that would be helpful, if a meeting were possible that would be great but I'd understand if not.
