Title: Entertaining census entry
Post by: Suekilp on Sunday 06 August 17 20:58 BST (UK)
Hi
I'm trying to find a census entry that I read on one of the threads here, where the head of household entertained himself by writing funny descriptions of his family's occupations and his necessity for glasses when it was gloomy. Can anyone remember this and give me a link, please?

It was somewhat similar to a USA entry in the 1880 Census where one Catharine Cudney, aged 15, under "occupation" was described as "does as she pleases". 😀

Can't find the particular thread, but this sounds similar (though it doesn't give specific details)

Having fun now googling unusual census entries! Findmypast did a blog on the 1911 census in 2015 -

Towards the bottom of the blog is an example of "infirmities" within a family - quite amusing (sounds a bit like my family  :P)

Came across this from 1851 census. It was a household of 28 Irish people in Birmingham. Head of household was a labourer like his 27 fellow residents. His occupation though has an addition. Written in brackets after labourer were the words "Low Lodging House or Piggery". A comment by the census-taker perhaps? Or a reflection from a young Irishman on the circumstances in which he found himself.
Not entertaining, rather disturbing.

One of the dictionaries says . . . . .

"behaviour regarded as characteristic of pigs in greed or unpleasantness"

It occurred to me that the phrase in brackets in the census enumerator's book was a racist comment on his part.

I found on the census for relatives who had emigrated to Canada where the census records religion - husband 'C of E'   wife 'perfectionist'
