Hi there,
I have an Agnes Mclellan (born C 1835) shipping records state her birthplace as Lanark, (1852)
Her daughters birth certificate states Agnes' birthplace as Dumfrieshire (her older daughter was the informant)
I've looked at the 1841 and 1851 census of Scotland, using ancestry (paid member) but not much luck. I found one family I thought it might be but they were all born in Stirling with a question mark. (and Janet wasn't listed.)
Also on the ship were Andrew McLellan 43, ag labourer
James McLellan-20, ag labourer
Janet McLellan-18, domestic servant
Alexander McLellan-15, Blacksmith
All were from Lanark, all were Presbyterian, all were literate.
The shipping record didn't state if these were all from the same family.I have a feeling they maybe.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated..

You need to give us more to go on. You obviously know more about Agnes than you have told us so far.
Was McLellan her maiden or her married name?
When and where was she married? To whom?
I assume you are saying that she emigrated somewhere in 1852? Where to? What ship? Where did it sail from and on what day?
Was Agnes listed with the other four McLellans on the ship or separately?
When and where were her daughters born?
What were the names and dates of birth of all her children?
I've looked at the 1841 and 1851 census of Scotland, using ancestry (paid member) but not much luck.

Sorry Forfarian, I didn't want to overload with too much information.

left Birkenhead ,Liverpool England on the TICONDEROGA. 4 August 1852 .Arrived Port Phillip Bay (Australia) 22 Dec 1852. (after a disastrous journey of overcrowding, disease, (Typhus and Scarlet fever).

It also stated in each line that they were from Lanark, presbyterian, literate.

I'm trying to locate Agnes on the 1841/51 scottish census. then hopefully her birth.
Agnes was listed on the shipping manifest under Janet.
The males were listed separately.
The copy of the ships manifest is very blurred.
Agnes married James ASKER in Geelong Vic 1853.
They remained in the area and raised all their children.
William Joseph, 1853
Mary , 1855
James Henry, 1856
Samuel 1857
Alfred 1858
Robert 1859
John 1860
George 1860
Margaret 1862
Alice 1866

There is this 1851 entry in Stirlingshire, not Lanarkshire:
Andrew McLennan 47 widower quarrier
Agnes McLennan 15 housekeeper
Alex McLennan 13
Address: Lower Bridge Street, Stirling
Everyone showing as born in Drymen Stirlingshire.

Agnes married James ASKER in Geelong Vic 1853.
Were there no parents names on her marriage or death?
Maybe locating an Obit &/or MI will give clues?

There are some family trees showing a James McLellan born to an Andrew McLennan and a Mary Stewart. They have him born in 1832 in Stirlingshire and then details of his life in Australia.
Have you seen this? You mention you have access to ancestry?
This is the possible 1841 census entry included in their detals:
John Mckennan 45 farmer
Margret Mckennan 45
Agnes Mckennan 15
James Mckennan 15
Elizabeth Mckennan 13
Andrew McLennan 6
James Mclellan 9
Agnes Mclellan 6
Alexander Mclellan 4
Address Walkmill, Kippen Stirlingshire
They have details on the tree of all the children incl Janet, Agnes and Alexander. Father Andrew's death and photographs of many of them are also included.

They have Agnes with a different marriage :-\ Second marriage?
This is included for her death details from the Australian Death Index:
Name Agnes McRae
Birth Year abt 1835
Age55
Death Place Snapper Point, Victoria
Father's Name McLellan Andw
Mother's Name Mary Stewart
Registration Year 1890
Registration Place Victoria
Registration Number 17650
Parents marriage/banns takes us back to Drymen in Stirlingshire https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTF1-J6L
Could the Agnes McLellan who married James Asker be a completely different Agnes and not connected to the 1852 shipping manifest.....? You also potentially have the Dumfries reference given by Agnes' daughter when she reported her mother's death. Some researchers give Agnes McLellan/Asker's origins as Irish (from Galloway).

I also saw this entry on the 1841 census and wondered if this is why the children from the family we have been discussing (James, Agnes, Alexander) did not show with their parents in 1841:
Andw McClelin 36 Labourer b. Ireland
Mary McClelin 40 b. Ireland
Jane McClelin 5 b. Aberdeenshire
Address: 10 Kilgour St, Old Machar Aberdeenshire
Daughter Janet/Jessie looks to still to be found in 1841 and 1851. You have her on the manifest and her death indexed entry shows:
Name Janet Sherlock
Birth Year abt 1834
Age 84
Death Place Frankston, Victoria
Father's Name Mclellan Andw
Mother's Name Mary Stuart
Registration Year 1918
Registration Place Victoria
Registration Number 8929

Thank you so much Monica.. I can eliminate that Agnes-parents andrew Mclellan and Mary stewart as the one I'm looking for died in 1905 as asker, back to the drawing board for me..:)
-
Better to eliminate as early as possible isn't it :-\
Your Agnes' death entry in 1905 on the index shows no parents' details I think? James Asker's show as James and Clara don't they.
First child for James and Agnes shows in 1855, William, I think. How have you been able to confirm Agnes age/date of birth? Was this from her death registration?
