Post by: tracym on Thursday 27 July 17 20:04 BST (UK)
Hi

Looking for any information on my partners great great grandad, we know he had a cafe on middle street ( any photos or any hints on where to find these would be great)

Which online directories would we need to look at to gather any information?

In the 1902 Kelly's Directory he is shown as "Courtney John Henry, refreshment rooms, 22 Middle Street. This Directory is not on the Historical Directories Site, I have a CD of it.

Hi

yes this is the correct John Henry  :)

we struggled reading the census to what his occupations were.

Wasn’t the temperance movement about the abstinence from alcohol?

Yes it was

But in the 1880s the temperance movement tried to revive the coffee house scene in an attempt to divert the working man from the perils of drink. Modeled on the mahogany-trimmed taverns promoted by the beer industry, 'Coffee taverns,' one pamphlet stated, 'must show there are beverages as comforting as beer, that there are beverages to be bought as cheap as beer.'
