Hi everyone
I am hoping someone can help me find Samuel Meredith, father of Elizabeth Jane Tratt Meredith.
Elizabeth was born in 1863 in Stepney. She married Henry Charles Rudolph in 1880. (Interestingly shown as full age on marriage records when she was in fact 17!)
On her marriage record her father is shown as a watch maker.
I cannot find either of them in any census records,only Elizabeth as a married woman in 1881 onwards.
I did find an Elizabeth living with a widowed Jane in 1871 with 5 siblings, but now realise they are the children of a William Thomas Meredith- so the wrong family. Although William was also a watch spring maker so I suspect related.
I can also find a Samuel Driver Meredith but he is a labourer and no records show an Elizabeth.
Any ideas or information will be greatly appreciated.

According the the GRO Index search, Elizabeth's mother's maiden name was Cole.

Samuel Driver Meredith death 1889 Hackney gives birth year of 1827
1885 electoral register Finsbury
78 Shakespeare Road South Hornsey and it says E Brown same address if I am reading it right

I wonder if there is another Meredith/Cole couple. And whether her middle name Tratt could be a clue.
Have you got a copy of the marriage certificate for her? Are any of the witnesses called Meredith?

Address for both is Salmon Lane.

Been looking at the births index for the children of Samuel Driver Meredith and Mary Ann Cole:
Charles Collett Cole b.23/6/1853
Margaret Susannah Elizabeth b.11/12/1854

Albert Ernest Edward b.10/11/1858
Mary Kate Alice b.13/12/1860 (birthdates from baptism)
then (from census and birth index):
?Joseph bc.1864
Harry James b.1865
John Silas b.1867
Harriet Emma b.1869
The anomaly here is Joseph bc.1864 - there is no birth entry for any Joseph Meredith in 1863/1864 in the right area and I can find no further trace of him.
I'm wondering whether the enumerator got it totally wrong and that it should have read Elizabeth - daughter - rather than Joseph, son.
In 1871 youngest child is Emma 1 who was actually Harriet Emma birth Dec.qtr.1869 - she married in 1892 and her father is shown as Samuel Driver Meredith, deceased but his occupation is given as 'Watchman'!!!
Seems too much of a coincidence to me - father Samuel Meredith, watchmaker, when Elizabeth married and 'watchman' when Harriet Emma married. Samuel also shown as 'Watchman' when daughter Mary Kate Alice married in 1881.
I can't find the family unfortunately on 1881 census.
Feel sure that this is all the right family and that the 1871 census has a glaring error showing Joseph, son 7 who didn't seem to exist instead of Elizabeth, daughter. 7
However, only the birth certificate is going to confirm if this is so as Elizabeth Jane Tratt Meredith does not appear to have been baptised (can find no family baptisms after Mary Kate Alice's in 1861 Limehouse).

I think it must be the right family too. Pity there is no baptism for her.
Samuel is also a watchman when daughter Margaret marries in 1878.

I believe this John Silas is my Great Grandfather John Silas Cole Meredith died Stoke Newington, London 1940.
