Hi Everyone,
I wonder if anyone has any information on the parents of My 2x great grandfather Michael Shields. I believe Michael was born in Ireland around 1845. There is some mention in the family that he was born in Donegal. His parents were Dennis Shields and Mary Gallacher. the only mention I have of the is on Michael's marriage and death certificates. Michael moved to Scotland sometime after his birth, I presume with his parents and died in Helensburgh in 1914.
Any information would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Different spellings in Griffiths Valuation....
SHEILDS in CLONDAVADDOG
a Darby and a John in 1858.
If he had siblings then their birth records always have where the parents were from and where they married.
I had to get one and they had more details than I expected.

well noticed Maggsie
Darby Sheilds is in Ballthoorisky Island, (No. 26) map ref 1
sharing land of 3 acres for agricultural purposes with four others including John Sheilds
John Sheilds is In Ballthoorisky Island, (No. 26) map ref 1
sharing land of 3 acres for agricultural purposes with four others including Darby Sheilds
so where are they living?
Ballthoorisky is currently spelt Ballyhoorisky
amilysearch.org may have records
I noticed Doaghmore townland in Griffiths has several Sheils and Friel in it’s the, which precedes Ballthoorisky Island, but my geogtaphy vanishes are they neighbours or not

My 3x gt grandfather was Samuel Shields. I use that spelling now as that is what is on his tombstone, which I have only known about for a couple of years. I had been using Sheils for many years before that for my 2x g grandmother Rebecca Cole nee Sheils. I usually used that selling because my mother's name is Sheila so it comes naturally to me.
Both Samuel and Rebecca are buried at Monreagh Presbyterian Church. Samuel was born c 1784. Rebecca's husband Samuel Cole is the son-in-law mentioned in the item below.
[Derry Journal, 10 Feb 1892]
DEATH OF A MAN AT 108 YEARS
The death is recorded to-day of Mr. Samuel Shields, of Molenan, at the remarkable age of 108 years. He was well known in the city and neighbor-hood to the present and past generations, having resided with his son-in-law and grandchildren close to Molenan for over forty years. The deceased, who was born at Ballougry, had a vivid recollection of the incidents of the Rebellion of ’98, and being an eye-witness of the event, often detailed with great clearness the removal of James Napper Tandy and the French prisoners to Lifford Jail after their capture in the La Hoche of Lough Swilly. His faculties were unimpaired to the last
I do not have any further information on Samuel except he is recorded as a weaver on the marriages of his daughters. I only know 4 daughters (Rebecca, Margaret, Catherine and Mary Ann) but no sons so I do not have any male names to hint of a connection to Michael or Dennis.
I do not see the names Michael or Dennis in my Monreagh/ Taughboyne Sheils extracts. So not much help.
Cheers
Linda

Rather than searching in Donegal I suggest you check Scottish records (if you haven't done so already). If Michael's parents died in Scotland there should be more details on their death certificates. What about census records? Also, have you found Michael in 1911 census (that one is more apt to give a more exact place of birth).
