The above two persons appear on the 1911 Census living in 43 Baythorne Street, which I assume is in the East End of London. According to the census they were both born in 1846 and were married about 1886. I cannot find the marriage and therefore the spouses maiden name. It says that she was born in Croydon. Can anyone please help me find the marriage. Thanks

Baptism 31 July 1867 at St Saviour's, Croydon gives Emma's birthdate as 5 June 1867.
Parents: Walter Craig (police constable) and Caroline, of 4 Beulah Grove.
-
The Craig family were in South Shields in 1871: RG10/5037/31/17. Emma was "Isabella Em", aged 3.
By 1881 Walter Craig (born Horncliff(e), Durham c 1831) was an inmate in Mile End workhouse.

I can't find a marriage, can you avm?
-
No marriage found yet, but I am wondering whether there may be a Scottish connection with this family. I wonder where Caroline and the children were after 1871?
-
Alternatively it may be one of those cases where a young couple found that a baby was on the way and didn't make it down the aisle.
James Rixon was actually younger than we thought - birth reg Dec qtr 1867 Mile End Old Town, so only about 19 when daughter Elizabeth was born.
Added: James' birthdate was 25 September 1867, according to his baptism on 7 November 1879 at St Luke's, Mile End Old Town. Parents: Elijah (a baker) and Martha Louisa.
-
Elizabeth Isabella Rixon was baptised 9 Aug 1896 at St Paul, Bow Common.
Parents: James (labourer) & Emma, of 36 Robeson St.
No birthdate stated for Elizabeth, but she would have been about 10 years old at this point.
-
Looks like they married belatedly, Emma already having informally taken James' surname:

Good find.

Hi groom/avm228
Thanks for your considerable help. Odd that none of us could find a marriage, as the 1911 Census said that they had been married for 25 years, but maybe this was a lie. I looked for Horncliff(e) Durham, but I think that it must be the one in Northumberland. I am surprised that Walter, being a Policeman, should finish up a long way from the NE in the workhouse! Apologies for the birthdate error. Just noticed avm228 that you have now found a marriage, but why would they say 25 years instead of 10/11? The Census also said that there were two children.
-
They would say they had been married 25 years because they had a 24 yr old daughter! Needed to look respectable. This happens more often that you might think.
Can't see a trace of another child, but it may be that they were including e.g. a stillborn child which at that time would not have been registered.

Obviously to cover up the fact that they weren't married when their eldest child was born. ;D ;D Not unusual.

Thanks to both of you.

My ancestors were from Horncliffe.
This may clear up the confusion about Durham/Northumberland.

Very interesting. Thanks for the link.

Hello! I was just wandering if this couple were still of interest as they appear in my husbands family tree and I have been researching them recently, infact I wish I seen these posts before I started researching them! However I think that Emma Isabella or Isabella as she is sometimes known, might have married both James Rixon and his brother and had a son also so there may be more to the marriage that was posted on this thread..
