Title: Violet Went
Post by: Alistair Phillips on Friday 14 July 17 22:00 BST (UK)
Am trying to trace my family tree on my mother's side, she grew up living in West hill in Reading.

Her mother was Violet Went she died aged about 63 sometime in  a the late sixties early seventies, I don't know my grandfather's name my mother was born in 1931 in Oxford, she died last year.

My grandfather was knocked down and killed by a motorcar on Southampton Street in Reading when my mother was either 3 or 4 years old she had a brother 2 year's younger William Went who died roughly 15 years ago.

My grandmother had a sister named Flo who married and had 3 children a girl Brenda and two boys the oldest Alan can't remember the youngest. Unfortunately I cannot remember her married name although I know her husband died during the late seventies.

Any help would be greatly appreciated many thanks

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

I think that this is your grandparents marriage:

December qtr 1930
Henley Registration District     vol 3a, page 2593

Went, William C
Chapman, Violet M

Looks like your mother's birth, a year later also in Henley Reg.District.

Violet's death
September qtr 1973
Basford Reg.District     vol 3c, page 129
Went, Violet May     DoB 16/May/1903

Many thanks for the reply

This is surely my grandparents marriage as her full name was violet may went and a bell has rung as I now remember my (great) aunt Flo's surname was Chapman

It has also confirmed that I wasn't sure where my mother was born I was told Oxford although someone did say it could have been Henley

Thanks again KGarrad anything else you may find would be most interesting

I can't see the full report but a newspaper snippet shows that William Charles Went died in a road accident after stepping off a narrow pavement to allow a woman to pass safely - 'Man's Courtesy Costs Him His Life'.
It is very sad.

It is very sad.

He was a 31 yr old railway porter, of West Hill, Reading.  The accident took place in Southampton St, Reading, but he died subsequently in hospital.  Inquest verdict: accidental death.  The foreman of the jury remarked "It is exceedingly sad that a man should lose his life through an act of courtesy".

(Per various newspaper reports published in early December 1936).

This is getting very interesting I knew the details of his accident having been brought up going to my nans house in Reading and know the stretch of pavement in Southampton Street where it happened the path narrows from roughly 12-15 feet to 4 feet.

Thank you very much for your interest in my family

Many thanks KGarrad, giggsycat, Heywood, avm228, Annette7, candrjm, your efforts have enlightened me about the history of a big part of my mother's ancestors how they came to Reading though probably because my grandfather met my grandmother in Henley so they were originally from Gloucester.

Cheers and again many thanks.
