Title: "Who Do You Think You Are", Series 14: #2 Craig Revel Horwood
Post by: Daffodilica on Friday 14 July 17 00:11 BST (UK)
So, what did everyone think of tonight's episode? I have to say it was refreshing to see someone who seemed to take everything in his stride and came across as genuinely interested in his history. No tears - hurray! Off topic - I also found myself admiring his t-shirts!!

Didn't she look well for 100?

I did think to myself though- how many of us have an ancestor that we associate with? How many strange links and parallels? In my case, I don't think there are any... I was an animal care assistant as my first job and the closest any of my ancestors got to working with animals was either an ag lab or a butcher. I now work in the Environmental Services department at a rescue and many of my female ancestors would have been cleaners and housekeepers etc in domestic service... but still, there's nobody I've found that I've really thought "you are like me, I am like you".

Maybe I'm secretly adopted  ::)

I really enjoyed it, didn't have the foggiest who he was as we don't watch Strictly. Might be tempted to now. He showed a real interest in his family. And I loved his Grandmother.

To me His Granny was the highlight and the clogdancer.
Granny looked so well and great she was living with family at 100.

I had a cousin who worked in same part of a government department, many miles from either of our birthplaces. She was retired 30 years from that Office before I joined it.
She was in her 90's when I did meet her.

I agree. I really enjoyed his refreshing and interested approach. It was an interesting story on both sides of his family, the gold mining and the clog dancing. Those folks travelling so far from home in the mid 1800s were very brave as I'm sure they wouldn't have any idea what sort of life they would be going to.  I absolutely loved his grandma. What a lovely lady.

Found it very interesting. I would have liked them to have gone and found the relatives that traveled out to Australia from Essex in the records available here.

Great clog dancing and an interesting view of Craig without any of the fancy stuff (except the occasional "Darling").  I now look at him in a different way and found him refreshingly relaxed but also clearly fascinated by his ancestors' history.  Since most of them originated from England, it should have been possible to trace them further back, but there was a lot of information to process.  I, too, had relatives prospecting for gold in Ballarat, so knew a bit about that, but it was interesting to see the pictures and to discover that mining was still going on there at the same spot where Craig's ancestors had worked.  I enjoyed this one, especially Granny.

I enjoyed this episode too. He seemed to have a relaxed approach and I loved his T-shirts too - absolutely Fabulous Darling  ;D ;D

What a life it must have been mining for gold. The programme gave a good insight into this. What rotten luck that the granddaughters were not left a share of the family fortune.

When he found his link to dancing I really thought the clog dancing looked great fun.

As others have said his granny was the star of the show. 100 years old and still very much alert. Good for her.

I really enjoyed this episode. Craig seemed like a really nice, normal guy who was genuinely interested in the stories he was being told. And the dance link was treated well, not over-egged and laboured but a fun coincidence.

Like other posters, I also wanted to go further back but I can see why they chose to stick with Australia instead. It's only an hour and good to see records in another country. I'm researching New Zealand which is absolutely new to me so the information about reasons for immigration during that period was really helpful.

Wow -- didn't think they would better Charles Dance, and I absolutely did not like Craig, but now a new light 'shineth' on him :) :) :)   ha ha... very very interesting, I had sparkly eyes at the end of the prog.

I have links with Ballarat, my poor baby 200th cousin 10 times removed died of typhoid in the gold rush age 3 ...   So it made me think there is more info I can find about her.   I already had lots of help on here to find her death cert.. (good old Rootchatters xxxxx)

I too have links to Oz, but mostly in the 20th century - my brother & family live in Canberra, and my mum's sister spent some of her life in Fremantle.

Nobody in my lot was at the Eureka Stockade (as far as I know).

However I do have a 2nd cousin 6 times removed who in 1855 abandoned his wife in Huddersfield and spent the rest of his days teaching dancing in Melbourne.  ;D

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode too. He had a wonderful approach to receiving all the information with such a keen interest.

His granny at 100 was an interesting lady and I loved all the photos she had. ( very jealous of those as so few oldies in my albums)

He certainly had a real sparkle when he discovered the clog dancer and how successful he'd been.

I would also liked to have seen more about the relatives in Uk, but it's only an hours programme and there was plenty in this one!

I felt very sorry that the two sisters missed out on any inheritance, especially as the rest came out of it so well - wonder how they've progressed since! Another tale.

Considering he comes from Australia I thought he'd cultured a very English accent well 'darling'!

Very enjoyable.

I almost didn't bother to watch this one, as I had (and still have) no idea who this man is.

Highlights for me were Granny at 100, and the clog dancing .... but didn't they say something at the start of the programme that one of his ancestors was a convict sent to Oz ?   Pity not to have had him traced back here in UK.

But there's not a lot you can do in one hour.   I liked the Charles Dance programme better.

I almost didn't bother to watch this one, as I had (and still have) no idea who this man is.

He's a judge on "Strictly Come Dancing" - the one giving low marks, and negative comments (mostly)!
He was a dancer, and is now a choreographer, and theatre director.

Perhaps I shouldn't express my ignorance, but what is 'Strictly Come Dancing' ??   Sounds like some ghastly TV programme !

And can I say (as an aside and off topic) to sjsea, that I have a Herbert Stubbs, and a Jessie Stubbs in my tree .... were they in Canada ?

Personally, I preferred Charles' episode but I still enjoyed this one. I feel he could have done some research himself and that most of the episode was filler - it's good to have a bit of information and insight about the jobs but it just felt like too much in this episode. However, I did like it when he saw his Nan who is doing remarkably well for 100 and did learn some information from the episode. 3/5.

I did enjoy the programme, and was amused that a champion dancer had been uncovered among Craig's ancestors, but I find it very hard to believe that a professional dancer, performer and choreographer has no knowledge of clog dancing. ::)

Really enjoyed this - particularly as I've been researching the Shaw family on behalf of my son in law. But think I must have missed a bit  . . . did they explain where the name Shaw came from - the English records seem to give the name as Macklin (or have I got the wrong marriage?)

This episode was OK.  :-\ (I didn't know who Craig Revel Horwood was).

I thought they spent too much time on the panning for gold and a bit too much on the clog dancing, and not enough on the family history.
