Hi
Over the years I have been researching my family tree but I have failed to find out what happened to my fathers Aunt, Rose Maud Hibberd who was born on 13 August 1897 in Shoreditch, London. I have her in the 1911 census at a Workhouse in Hackney and then nothing. I can't find any marriages or death, she seems to have just disappeared. I had a thought today. I wonder if she had been part of the stolen white generation that were shipped out to Australia from Children Homes? But I would not have any idea as to where to start with this? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Rose M Hibb(E)ard 1929 Islington to Leonard Merilees. (Surname could be wrong spelling)

The Merilees marriage can be discounted as a free search of the 1939 shows Rose M as born in 1905.

Death record -
Rose Margaret Calahan
Birth Date - 5 Feb 1912
Date of Registration - May 2001
Age at Death - 89
Registration district - Greenwich
Therefore it would appear that the Hibberd /Callard marriage can also be discounted.

Have you checked the 1939 register to see if there any Rose M's or Rose with the date of birth 13 August 1897?

Are you quite sure Rose is in a workhouse in Hackney?

Could you give the names of other close family members? There is another Rose Hibberd on the 1911 Census in Hackney
-
Wonder if this is worth a look?

I completely forgot that I had posted that as it was some time ago so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

First off, I thank you all for your speedy replies.
I think first up I need to check the Rosina Hibberd who married a William F Harrup in Shoreditch and Rose Hibbert to x? Walker 1920 q2 W.Ham 4a 297.
Just to clarify a few points that some of you asked;
She is listed twice in the 1911 census: living at home and at the work house.
The family had lost contact with her before the her parents died so she would not have registered the deaths.
There was no will as the family were poor.
Im busy at work over the next few days but will come back to you with my results re the marriages.

Are you sure that it is a workhouse ???

That's what I was thinking too Rosie, institutions can often be children's homes, schools, places for teenage girls to train for future work,or even hospitals.
I could then visualise Rose being included both at home and away, her parents not being sure in advance where she is going to be on census night.
-
It may be an idea for OP to look at the first page of the 'institution' as it should give more information against the people who were running it ;)

Just had a look at the 1911 census. it was St Leonards Branch School, 26 and 28 Lower Clapton Road, London N E.

26&28 Lower Clapton Road was a receiving home for up to 77 children where they processed the children coming into the union care and included a medical examination. The home also provided accommodation for short term care for children.
Children would then be passed on to the Hornchurch Homes.

Thank you. So where do I need to look now?

I would imagine that this is possibly relevant as 'Shoreditch Guardians' is mentioned
