I have been asked by a friend to assist him in receiving his father's military history / records.
Sadly he only knows his name and date of birth and that he served with the Royal Signals
On the Government website he needs his Service Number and I am hitting a brick wall.
I have been told this site may be able to assist
Name : Joseph David Wilkins
DoB : 28 August 1921
Your help and assistance will be grateful

Allen9315,
As ex Signals myself, I go on to a site which I feel should be of some help to you. Simply google for "Royal Corps of Signals" and then scroll down to "Royal Signals - Index". Click on to that site and then select "comcen" and post your enquiry there.
I feel sure that you will get the help you need.

Thanks for your help

The only place that will have his full service record is the MOD via the web site you have looked at. While on the top page it says you need his service number, you will find when you select the forms you have to complete that you can use his date of birth as an alternative. You do need his death certificate and clearly you will have the permission of his next of kin.

I have passed this information to my friend and advise him to include a copy of his birth certificate to confirm he is next of kin

No need for him to send a copy of his own birth cert. On the application form. he will be certifying and signing to the effect that he is the next of kin, that is sufficient (and it doesn't matter if there are other sons/daughters).
