Post by: heardn on Tuesday 27 June 17 17:34 BST (UK)
The chap in the attached photo enlisted after the war I think, but cant be sure. His name was Leonard Grainger. Id be grateful if anybody could identify the regiment from the uniform and insignia, and maybe the likely date? Many thanks for looking and for all help

Hi, undoubtedly a mounted man, Bandoleer, Spurs, Jodhpurs, I'll throw Horse Guards into the mix for you regarding his regiment, someone else will be along to add input I'm sure.

Frank.

Good evening,

Definately a cavalry man, he is wearing a 1908 cavalry pattern sabre. The greatest cavalry sword ever made but b******* heavy when you have to carry it in hand on parade for an hr or two.

He could be 1st or 2nd Life guards, Horse guards, 5th dragoon guards or 7th hussars. They all wore that shape of badge but without being able to see the detail in the centre it is impossible to tell.

Added, if he managed to enlist in his local cavalry regt then 7th hussars.

Many thanks for your help. I had another look at the original photo, but the scan reproduces it very well - there isn't any more detail to be seen in the cap badge unfortunately.

The key to determining it are the collar badges.  They are for the 7th Hussars.

Household division cavalry did not wear such collars.

Many thanks. That is really helpful. After earlier replies I had an idea that it may be the 7th Hussars because of the regional connection.
