Could Rootschatters check out the following site:
http://wikitree.org
It seems an excellent idea, something many of us have thought about.  The drawback is that at the moment you can only enter names one at a time, but they're working on the idea of uploading gedcoms.  It's at an early stage but it's worth our co-operation.

Thank you for the heads up on this site.  I’m a regular user of Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page), but missed this one. 

It has exciting potential.
