From the article I get that the father was ill for some time, mother had pre-deceased him - so had she been ill for some time - there were 9 children. Sounds like a good reason to be getting assistance from the Destitute Board.

Hi,
From the South Australian Police Gazette, 5th November 1873, page 174.
INQUESTS
An inquest was held by E. Gower, J.P., at Port Augusta, on the 26th ult., on the body of Robert Kemp, who died the previous day. The jury found the "deceased died from heart disease, accelerated by a wound in his throat, caused by his own hands, while in a state of temporary insanity."

I can't check Elizabeth's age on her burial record as the Old Port Augusta Cemetery's records were destroyed by fire in 1944. Her death notice has her age as 34 years. If she was of full age in 1856 then should would have been at least 38 in 1873. She had her first child in 1853.

The newspaper article is clearly states that the family only received aid for 12 months.
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article39298083
South Australian Register 31 Oct 1873
A Very Sad Case.— On Saturday afternoon, October 25, at Port Augusta, Robert Kemp, aged 62 years, attempted to take his life by cutting his throat, and he expired about 8 p.m. through loss of blood. The man had been ailing for a long time, and often he was in such severe pain that people could hear him moaning at a great distance away.
The poor fellow's wife died about five weeks ago leaving nine children, four of whom are able to help themselves, while the others, ranging from six months to ten years old, have been taken care of by friends and relatives. The family had been aided by the Destitute Board for 12 months.

Obviously omitted from the one I linked. SA Records Passenger search is not functioning at the moment. Passenger list survival rate in SA is poor and lists have been compiled from various sources including BISA :-X I will see if the passenger list for the EPAMINONDAS is listed tomorrow when hopefully SA Records website is functioning properly. Seems to be down a lot these days.
Sources for passenger lists on Shipslist website.
State Library South Australia, official passenger lists, mainly of immigrants arriving in South Australia under United Kingdom assisted passage schemes, 1847-1886 GRG 35/48a (formerly ACC 313); Sydney Shipping Gazette; South Australian Register; The South Australian Government Gazette; Biographical index SA 1836-1885 (the B-index column indicates individuals who may be found in that index, with corresponding reference number for further research)
Cheers

The name KEMP not included in the list of 'Government emigrants' who arrived on the EPAMINONDAS - published in the South Australian Register.

Nor is he listed as an unassisted immigrant at SA Archives
https://www.archives.sa.gov.au/content/our-catalogue
Why his arrival is noted as c1853 in BISA?

Thanks cando. I've also noticed that there is a big difference between Roberts recorded age on the marriage record and compared with the one on the death record. I'm leaning towards the death record being more accurate as it has newspapers entries to back up the age. Thoughts?
