Title: free security ?
Post by: dolly dimples on Sunday 18 June 17 18:49 BST (UK)
Hi all, I was wondering about putting a free security on PC, and if anyone has which one would you recommend.  I did have Macafee when I bought this new PC, but that ran out. today. What are the risks in using a free one. I am not using PC very much now but like to keep in touch with my favourites , which this site is one.  Any tips appreciated, thanks Dolly

I've used AVG free for years with no problems.

There are quite a few, I use Avast. Whichever one you choose make sure you check how to uninstall what you have correctly!

AVG/Avast now the same company so either will suffice. I've used both.

It is possible you may need to download an uninstaller to completely remove the old Mcafee. It is many years since I've done it so I can't vouch for it, but something like this:

Proceed with care. Someone else might have more up to date knowledge.

Good evening,

If you are on windows you should have it already, windows defender. On windows 10 click on the windows icon bottom left. Click all apps, scroll down click windows system, scroll down click windows defender.

It will give you several options, the best for first time use is full scan. After that you can do weekly checks or whatever interval suits you.

Not sure about the procedure on other windows such as 8 or 7 or older if they had it. I find it very good but I know others have said it isn't but to each their own.

Hi all,

May I belatedly join in please.   I have had AVG Free on my computer for a number of years and 2 or 3 months ago inadvertently clicked the Internet Security trial, but did not take up the offer.
Since then I am at a total loss: the screen display is different, and I can't make head or tail of it.
I used to have it auto-set to scan my computer weekly, but now it doesn't happen.  If I click on 'Scan Now' it mostly doesn't work (twice only) and I get a box in red that says my Internet Security trial has expired and invites another trial (or purchase).
Anyone out there able to advise me please.

Regards

Jolyon

When something similar happened to me, I think I removed the free AVG and free trial and then downloaded the free AVG again. Someone may know an easier way though.

Jim1 & Groom,

Have uninstalled/reinstalled AVG Free as you suggested and hopefully it's done the trick. Scanned computer without the message "Internet Security' trial has expired" appearing.

Had a worrying moment re-installing AVG when Windows Defender suddenly jumped in, saying it needed to scan my computer but then said it couldn't, for some unknown reason.  Cancelled it and AVG finished installing.  Fingers crossed things will now be ok.

Hopefully in conclusion, can either of you guide me on setting up a periodic scan?

Jolyon
