I am seeking any/all recorded/posted Guthrie trees in/from Northumberland. I believe my ancestors lived in Northumberland in the 1600 and 1700's and possibly before that. My relatives may very well still be living in Northumberland.
-
Do you have any idea of the area they were from? Northumberland is a big county :)
Trini.

Trini..
Thank you for answering my message. I believe they may be from Bewick Folly, parish of Eglingham, and/or parish of Chatton. My paper trail ends with Thomas Guthrie marrying Hannah Bradford in Leeds, England on December 1794. I guess Thomas to be in his mid 20's, at that time, which makes his birthday be around 1770.. I am seeking a Guthrie family tree From a Guthrie who lives in Northumberland that leads back to a Guthrie in Leeds, England. If this fails can other Northumberland Guthrie's, around 1770, be located?
Thanks again for your help, Reid W Guthrie

Hi Reid
As Trini says, it's a big county so it's not going to be a simple exercise to locate any people called Guthrie.
Can I suggest that you start with a search on freereg. I tried Guthrie Northumberland without dates or specific parishes and there were too many to display! Narrow the search a little and you could find the people you are looking for.

I'm wondering how you know that Thomas Guthrie originated from Northumberland?
When Thomas Guthrie died in 1846 his age is given as 79 making a birth date circa 1767 - I note that his children were baptised in a non-conformist church so this may well be his baptism:
Thomas Guthrie b.20/5/1767, bp.25/5/1767 West Chapel Presbyterian, NC, Wooler, Northumberland, son of William and Elizabeth (I note his first son named William).

Hi Annette 7
I was excited to see your question about how I knew that Thomas Guthrie was from Northumberland. I don't really know that he was from Northumberland. He was the most promising Thomas Guthrie I had found in my search because his family names were the same as my family names. What also excites me is how do you know that Thomas Guthrie of Leeds, England died in 1846? I never knew that. I am hoping to find a Northumberland Thomas Guthrie family tree that would lead back to Leeds, England.

Thomas Guthrie and wife Hannah are both in Leeds on 1841 census with dau.(?) Elizabeth 25.
No sign of Thomas and Hannah in 1851 and death index shows:
Thomas Gutherie June quarter 1846 Hunslet (district Leeds) aged 79 (bc.1767).
Hannah Guthrie Dec.quarter 1847 Hunslet aged 76 (bc.1771).
(By the way, don't you mean you are hoping to find a Northumberland Thomas Guthrie tree going 'forward' to Leeds rather than back?)

Hi Annette 7
I am hoping to find a Northumberland Guthrie family who lives in Northumberland now, or who has/had relatives living in Northumberland who has a Guthrie family tree leading back to the 1760/1770's. I believe I may have relatives living in Northumberland now, who are related to Thomas Guthrie of Leeds, England. I believe the Guthrie family in Northumberland goes back to the 1560's when Scotland and England had a short war and Scotland lost. The Guthrie Clan fought in that war with other clans. Annette 7 you are really getting me excited about all this....thank you...

Elizabeth Chandler was my 6x great aunt. She was born 21 January 1770 in Wooler and was baptised 28 January 1770 in Wooler, Northumberland.
She married Aaron Guthrie on 2 July 1797 at St. Mary's Church in Wooler, Northumberland.
Their son - Nicholas Guthrie (... named after his grandfather/Aaron’s father) – was born about 1798 and was baptised on 24 May 1798 at the UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHEVIOT STREET-NC in Wooler, Northumberland.
Elizabeth Chandler/Guthrie died in November 1798 and was buried on 14 November 1798 at St. Mary's Church in Wooler, Northumberland.
Aaron Guthrie (... born about 1765 and baptised on 25 May 1765 at West Chapel in Wooler, Northumberland) went on to marry Ann Benthron on 20 May 1799 at St. Mary's Church in Wooler, Northumberland. He died in July 1835 in Burradon, Northumberlandand was buried on 26 July 1835 at St Michael & All Angels Church in Alwinton, Northumberland.
Nicholas Guthrie (... my 1st cousin 6x removed) married Ann Tynemouth on 14 July 1822 at St. Alban's Church in Earsdon, Northumberland. He died 22 May 1862 in Bedlington, Northumberlandand and was buried on 25 May 1862 in St. Cuthbert's Church in Bedlington, Northumberland.
The only Guthrie’s I have researched are Aaron and Nicholas.
Let me know if you would like any further Chandler info.
Hope this info is of help.
Regards
Lelly

I have an Alexander Guthrie marrying Elizabeth Steavenson by licence in Berwick 1816. The Steavenson family were a wealthy & influential family at that time. There is also an Alexander Guthrie, porter merchant in the 1806 Berwick directory, which may be him or maybe his father. It is not a direct line for me so this is the only info I have.

Do you know when your Grandmother was born? I have several Great Aunts who were born in Leeds.
-
She was born in 1939, her grandfather was Godfrey Guthrie, are you related to him?

It seems to me that most of the Guthrie's in Leeds are related in some manner. There was a great aunt, of mine, born in 1839, Mary Guthrie, born in Armley, whose father was Ebenezer Guthrie, and mother was Mary Ann Land. Being of the same age I bet they knew each other, and were possibly cousins. If you are interested I can post a list of my male relatives who lived in Leeds in the early 1800's.

Wow, great, you have Thomas Hick Guthrie in your family tree. I guess that makes us cousins about 100 times removed. I am wondering if you have any Guthrie's in the 1700's? My paper trail ends at 1794.
