I'm seeking further info on a distant relative , John Dickson CROSS .
With such a distinctive name, I naively thought he'd be easy to find .
Here's what I do know from an extensive search of Ancestry.co.uk etc :
Born NORWICH , July 8th 1852.
Baptised August 1st 1852 at St John de Sepulchre , Norwich
He was the 7th & youngest child born to William & Susan (or Susanna) CROSS (nee CATTERMOLE)
1861 Census they're all at Rose Lane , Norwich .
1871 Census he's living at Allen St, Islington with his elder married sister and her family (Jane & William ELGOOD ), and another unmarried sister Emma Elizabeth CROSS.
Then he goes off-radar for 3 census, re-appearing in 1911 , married to Elizabeth Alice (nee Sharp - born in Arundel, Sussex abt 1860) and living at Catherine Grove , Greenwich .
Occupation Gun Factory Labourer , Woolwich Arsenal .
Working backwards and searching for his wife in earlier census, I can only find an E CROSS , born Arundel and abt the right age , at London County Asylum , Dartford in 1901 .
His father William Cross died at Rose Lane Norwich Sept 1880 and his elder brother Robert hanged himself at Rose Lane almost exactly a year later, Sept 1881. Mother Susan remained in Norwich upto 1881 Census but may have died in Islington later in 1881, just after Robert's suicide.
I've found a Wills & Probate entry dated June 1927, leaving £84 8s 8d to Louisa Mary SHARP (spinster), who was probably Elizabeth's sister. Address given as Edric Rd, New Cross ..
I'm hoping someone has him in their tree - they were a big family - or can suggest where I might start looking again to fill in this missing 40-year period of John's life ? He was my 2x Grt-Uncle .
Any info and advice appreciated , On- or Off-List , please .
Thanks
Andy

Incorrect transcription of 100-yr old handwriting must be the equivalent of modern day auto-correct !
Plenty there to keep me busy .

You're welcome :)

You will have seen that John Dickson Cross had died a decade earlier, on 27 June 1917. Probate was granted to Louisa Mary Sharp on 11 July 1927. You say he left money "to" her - she was the executor, but without the will one can't identify who the beneficiaries were.

Elizabeth Alice Cross died aged 69 on 2 May 1929 - abode White Rose Cottage, Alma St, Lancing, Sussex.
Administration was granted to Louisa Burman, wife of Edmund John Burman, on 6 Feb 1930.

Administration was granted to Louisa Burman, wife of Edmund John Burman.
This leads us to the marriage of the daughter Louisa Cross to Edmund J Burman, Jun qtr 1923 Lambeth. They had a daughter Marie Louise born in Greenwich in 1925 (she died unmarried in Worthing in 1974).
Edmund John Burman of 7 Edric Rd, New Cross died aged 62 on 23 January 1938.
Louisa Burman died aged 75 in Worthing district, Mar qtr 1963 (26 Jan 1963 at Worthing Hospital, per probate records - her daughter was her executor).
