Title: George Cross
Post by: TruckerCrossie on Tuesday 30 May 17 21:19 BST (UK)
Hello
I'm trying to find out about George Cross (the person....not the medal!).
I know that he was born in 1753 in West Halton, North Lincolnshire,
I also know that at some time he got married to Jemima but that's all I do know.
If anyone could help me I will be very grateful.
Thanks in advance.
Kev

Why do you ask, do you think I have arrived at the wrong person? ??

:) You could well be right, but the question is with a name like George Cross he could have been born anywhere other than Lincolnshire?
What do you know of Thomas?

Born 1783
Died 1863
Hatton, Horncastle, Lincolnshire,

In 1841 census is this him?

Thomas Cross 58 occ Ag Labourer
Ann 53
William 28 (?  18)
James 13
Jane 10
John 6
Residing at Hatton, Horncastle
Census ref HO107/636/ 22/6 / 6

Oddly last column on original suggests born possibly Leicester?

EDIT 1851 HO107/2107/70/3 Both Thomas and Ann b Leicestershire?

Hi again, this is the 1851, 1861 still to locate :-

Thomas Cross 67 b Gaiton, Leicestershire
Ann 63 b Gaiton
Headman 28 ( is this William from 1841)? b Hatton
James 23 Married b Hatton
Elizabeth 21 Married/Wife b Tetford
John 16 b Hatton
Elizabeth 9 Granddaughter b Boston
Residing Hatton, Horncastle

Cannot locate a Gaiton in Leicestershire, could it therefore be Gayton le Marsh East Lindsey, Caistor the baptism of Thomas in 1783 was Caistor, West Lindsey
Have you Thomas in 1861 census?

EDIT Note in 1861 census certain areas within Horncastle registration district including Hatton had pages missing.

Hello again Keyboard.
I have also found the christening in Caistor and now I am starting to wonder if this may have been misinterpreted onto the records. I find it hard to imagine that he would have been born in Gayton le Marsh and then taken 22 miles  (a long way in those days) to Caistor to be christened.
(The christening record is actually where I got George and Jemima from although I can't find anything about them).

Thank you very much for your help.
I shall now press on and see what else I can find.
Regards
Kev
