Title: Ostle conundrum
Post by: Cazza47 on Tuesday 30 May 17 18:54 BST (UK)
I am looking for parents of Thomas Ostle (can also be Ostell/Ostel) he was born in 1851 Longtown reg. he is living with his mother Isabella in Cumrew in 1861, with siblings plus  children with Little surname, Isabella is married to Jonathan Ostle who is working as a servant at Chapel House, Talkin. Their children Thomas 1851, Christopher 1853, Mary Jane 1856, William 1858 & Margaret 1862 all have the mother's maiden name as Little according to gov reg site. The only marriage I can find for Jonathan Ostle is a marriage to a Isabella Hunter, there obviously was a marriage between an Ostle & Hunter because there are children Joseph, Robert, Jane & hannah whose mother's maiden name is Hunter. By 1871 Jonathan appears to be working at Netherton, Talkin for the Dobson Family, also working there is son Christopher. Mary Jane, William & Margaret now live at Ringate, Hayton but their mother is now Elizabeth, confused I certainly am. I cannot find Thomas but he married Mary Palmer in 1872.
Can anyone help with this?
I am sure Isabella's surname must be Little.

.

Given the presence of Little children in household - have you considered that Isabella may have been previously married?

Have you found any birth entry for any of the Little's to check mmn?

Marrriage of Isabella Hunter, father - Adam Bell
2 Aug 1845,Holme-Cultram, Cumberland, England
Spouse - Jonathan Ostle

Therefore this Isabella was a widow (had hoped her father would have the surname Little). So not the correct marriage  ???

What is the relationship to 'head' given for the 'Little' children on the census & who is listed as 'head'?

The Little's are shown as boarders - not as children or other relative to Isabella

Isabella is shown as head (wife)

Ancestry tree shows parents of Isabella Little as Christopher Little and Jane Nixon.
Christopher and Jane married 8 February 1807 Arthuret Cumberland.

This couple appear on the 1841 census Arthuret Longtown Cumberland. Census shown on family search is a little mixed up  ::)

Christopher Little 60  - Jane Little 60  - Isabella Little 20

No source for marriage to Jonathan Ostle.

I'm sure I have read on RC that Elizabeth & Isabel(la) are/were interchangeable not too long ago on a thread but maybe I'm mistaken?

Thank you for all responses, another problem is that in 1861 census Jonathan gives his place of birth as 'Fatthouse' Cumberland but in 1871 census it is now Isel. I have never heard of Fatthouse.
