This problem has been in and out of my 'too hard basket' for 20 years! I'm hoping someone could help me please.
I would love to find some answers regarding my g.grandfather Samuel Daly who lists his father (in his marriage in Madras, India 31-12- 1853) as Arthur Henry Daly. We do not know who his mother was. Samuel Daly, possibly bp. 7 Feb 1825 at Ballinhassig, Cork, enlisted in the English Army in Cork on the 6-09-1844 and was later sent to India.
There he married in Bangalore, Charlotte Milton,( b. 1823 London) who was the Lady in Waiting to Lady Rawlinson. Their lives from then on - London then New Zealand, are fairly straight forward.
Their 3 children were - Arthur Henry Daly, b. Bangalore, 1856, Charlotte Esther Amelia Daly, b. 1859 N.Z. and Mary Ann de Burgh Daly, b. 1862 N.Z.
However, we do not know anything about Samuel Daly's lineage in Ireland, but the fact that his father's name was given to his son and the de Burgh name given to a daughter, appear in an Irish Family Tree on various sites which makes me curious if this his his family. But there is no indication of a 'Samuel' on this Tree.
His possible father, Arthur Henry Daly died in 1826 in Cork so Samuel would therefore have no recollection of him. I am loath to attach him to the Arthur Henry Daly/Johanna Gore Tree without proof.
I'll be grateful for any data that will sort this family of mine.
Thank you for taking time to consider this request and I look forward to suggestions when time permits.
Barrie.

There is a Samuel Daly
Baptised: Church of Ireland on 17-Aug-1826 with an address in
Ballydavid Loughrea Co. Galway
Arthur Hyacinth Daly Occupation: Private Gentleman
Mother: Charlotte Daly (no maiden name recorded)
The fact that Samuel had a daughter named Charlotte may be significant (though this could be for her mother)
There are records for 3 other children
Ann Baptisied 14 May 1818 Loughrea -parents Arthur HENRY esq.and Charlotte
Charlotte Baptised 22 Oct 1821 Loughrea- parents Arthur and Charlotte
Ulick Baptised 23 Mar 1824 Loughrea- parents Arthur Henry (private gentleman) and Charlotte

Quote"In 1837 a house called Ballydavid is listed as the residence of the Daly family in this area" Ballydavid is the address on Samuel Daly's baptismal record

Quote"From the Anglo-Norman conquest of Connacht in 1235 Loughrea served as the principal seat of power of the de Burgh Earls of Ulster and Lords of Connacht in the latter lordship"
Maybe this is the connection to the de Burgh name? (Burke is the same name)

There is a tree on line showing Ulick Arthur William Daly, brother of Francis Ismenia (I think that's the name on the 1901 census) he was married to Laura Mary Lord. His son was Ulick Lord Daly . He died in1933 in Gisborne Victoria NZ. Could he be a nephew of Samuel?

Thank you ever so much " Family Routes " for the detailed data on my sole Irish connection, Samuel Daly. My weekend has been made. There is much to ponder on and to follow up. It never ceases one at the kindness so many Family History folk assist in helping with us delving into the past. It would be wonderful to assist you if there was any research you wanted done on New Zealand as it is all so at hand for we Kiwis. Again thank you for bringing a grin to my old dial.
Barrie Green, New Zealand. :) :) :) :) :)

It's always good to dial up a smile. The Daly family seem to have been landed gentry and there is a lot on line about them to help your search.
There are 4 Dalys mentioned here http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/IRL-GALWAY/2001-07/0996181614
Arthur H. DALY, Loughrea,
Henry DALY, Ballydavid,
Arthur Gore DALY, Cooleeny,
Michael DALY, Hollyhill,
They're all from the same area and I wonder if they are all connected.
There are trees online that have an Arthur Henry Daly born 1765 in Galway with parents Michael and Lady Johanna Gore. They also have children: Denis,Hyacinth Richard and Ann. (There's that name Hyacinth again...I've never seen that as a male name...I've never seen it as a given name in Ireland before!)
It'll be fun sorting them all out!

Another Denis Daly from Loughrea....mother Catherine Gore, daughter of Sir Ralph Gore

They all seem to be interconnected.

Arthur Henry Daly's grandmother was Lady Anne de Burgh.
I'm assuming this is Arthur Henry Gore Daly.

Hi again Familyroutes - the data you keep on sending has certainly changed the perception I held of Samuel Daly. Nice to find that there was more to him than one ever perceived. Some of the backgrounds of his own folk help balance the ledger with some of our other folk who seemed to enjoy the environment of the one time Debtors Jails. Smiles seem to be a permanent component of our household. Again ever so many thanks for responses.

A lot of your relatives went to New Brunswick, Canada and the US.
This is a great site for them....

If it's any addition, there are various Dalys listed in the 'Loughrea 1891' book by Steve Dolan which includes a map of that town in 1791 and details on various inhabitants. The names listed include Denis Bowes Daly (x2), Hyacinth Daly, and Anthony Daly.

Hi Barrie ,I am also trying to find out more about Ggrandfather Samuel Daly ,I am a Morris from Woodville
Do you have an address where they lived in Onehunga and do you know how Samuel was killed.
Also any NZ army records, did he come here as a soldier or civilian
-
Thank you Judy for the mention, two years late! The book is actually 'Loughrea 1791'.
Hi Barrie. Surviving 1821 census extracts lists Daly (50), his wife Charlotte (28), and children Arthur (21), Isabella (19), Michael (18), Letitia (16), Denis (15), Hyacinth (11), Charles (9), Anne (4), and Charlotte (1). Charlotte is wife number two as his first wife, Jane nee Gore, died in 1812.
The best of luck in your research.
