Trying to find mother of James Elliott born around 1855-58 in Dittisham. He migrated to Australia in 1873 age 17
His Australian Death Certificate shows father as Samuel Elliott - Occupation - Seaman No mother listed.
He died February 1937 age 79

There is a James Hambling ELLIOTT birth registered June qtr 1853 in Totnes - mother maiden name BLANK.
Presumably this is them in the 1861 census at St George's St, Dittisham:
Samuel Elliott 41 Dittisham, Devon (occ. bargeman)
Sarah Elliott 41 East Alverton, Devon
Mary Sarah Elliott 13 Dittisham, Devon
Susanna Elliott 10 Dittisham, Devon
James Hy Elliott 7 Dittisham, Devon
Eliza Elliott 5 Dittisham, Devon
Samuel Thos Elliott 5 Dittisham, Devon
RG09/1416/149
and in 1871 James is a farm servant at Cornworthy working for Sarah HUTCHINGS

Samuel ELLIOTT married Sarah BLANK registered in Sep qtr 1845 at Totnes. (Vol 9/563)
-
1851 census at Dittisham:
Samuel Elliott 31 Dittisham (bargeman)
Sarah Elliott 31 East Allington
Mary S Elliott 3 East Allington
Susanna Elliott 0 Dittisham
Elizabeth Blake Visitor 7 Slapton
HO107/1873/514
and I think this is Samuel in the 1841 at Higher Dittisham:
Peter Elliott 65 Devon
Susan Elliott 65 Devon
Samuel Elliott 20 Devon
HO107/211/11
-
I think this is Sarah in 1841 at Knighton Farm, East Allington
George Yabsley 55
Elizabeth Yabsley 5
George Yabsley 24
John Yabsley 2
Mary Yabsley 15
John Wallston 15
Samuel Doney 15
William Adams 13
William Hutchings 13
Sarah Blank 20
(all born in Devon)
HO107/246/3
There is another Sarah BLANK around the same age in Slapton, but I don't think this is your Sarah, as she appears on later census unmarried with father Richard BLANK.

There is a possible baptism for Sarah BLANK in 1819 at East Allington, father: Thomas on findmypast, but I don't have access to the record. (Quite a few other children as well, and probably ties in with 1841 census at Coombe, East Allington:
Thomas Blank 53 Devon
Sarah Blank 45
William Blank 10
Jane Blank 8
Eliza Blank 6
Susan Blank 4
HO107/246/4
and in 1851 at East Allington:
Thomas Blank (wid) 61 East Allington
Susan Blank 13 East Allington
Grace Richards 26 East Allington
HO107/1876 /122

SAMUEL Elliott Christened 5 Jan 1820 Dittisham to PETER/SUSANNA
(F/S.Org)
A Tree has Peter marrying Susanna PEEKE, 1796 Dittisham (I cant confirm this)
But a Son of theirs Peter 1801 married a Susan ANDREWS 23 October 1823, Churston Ferrers, Devon, England.
Just posted this so there is no confusion as to Samuel being the Son of the second Peter/Susan Elliott.
Peter/Susanna Christened;
SUSANNA 5 Feb 1799
PETER 19 Jan 1801
GRACE 4 Sept 1803
SALLY 31 May 1807
JAMES 23 Sept 1810
JAMES 12 Dec 1813
SAMUEL 24 Dec 1815, died 30 Aug 1817
SAMUEL 5 Jan 1820**

PETER Elliott Christened 13 Feb 1774 Dittisham to JAMES/GRACE
unnamed ELLIOT married Grace MITCHELL 7 October 1755, Dittisham, Devon

Thank you both for this. Familysearch show James Hy Elliott born 1854 Dittisham to parents Samuel and Sarah Elliott. Then there is a James Henry Elliott baptised 1856 Devon no parents listed and a James Hambling Elliott born 1853 Totnes with no parents listed.

James Henry ELLIOTT birth registered at Plymtpon, Devon mother's maiden name VEAL in 1856 (about 26 miles from Dittisham) baptised in Cornwood to James and Elizabeth, who were married in 1853, so not 'your' James. ;)

Thank you very much. That information mean's a lot to me.

Hi
We seem to be discussing the Elliott's of Dittisham. Very confusing as there were two Elliott Familys in Dittisham in the 1800's. Peter the bootmaker lived in Sarah Elliotts Cottage in High Dittisham. This house is still there (2019). Peter the boatman lived down on the river and the house is no longer there.
Peter the boatman married Susanna Anders (Andrews) mentioned in previous posts.
They had a number of children including Lavinia who had a son on April 30 1855 who was baptised on May 27 John Frederick Elliott.
Fred joined his cousin Peter Elliott in Australia during the goldrush and they both stayed here.
Fred was my Great Great Grandfather and I would dearly like more information on him and any family history from Dittisham.

Welcome to RootsChat Peter999
coola2 who started this thread looking at the ELLIOT family of Dittisham hasn't been online here since 2017, but hopefully they will still have the same email address and receive notification of your post. They may well have more information they could share with you.
It sounds like you know quite a bit already about the family. Is there anything in particular you would like help with? eg, do you need family information earlier than mother Lavinia?

For interest, there is a lovely diamond wedding anniversary article about William Henry LANE and Eliza (nee ELLIOTT, daughter of Samuel) in "the Western Times" on Friday, Nov. 23, 1934 . She was daughter of Samuel ELLIOTT and Sarah BLANK, the twin sister of Samuel mentioned in reply #1. In the article it mentions that Samuel jnr lived at South Embankment, Dartmouth and that his wife was a "claimant to the Allery millions" - whatever that was! Also, while living at Strawberry Valley, near Dartmouth, Eliza LANE served tea to the Prince of Wales and Prince Charles of Belgium when they were cadets at the Royal Navy College, Dartmouth. :D
Happy to send you a copy of the article if you are interested.
