Title: Sydney Aronson (Aaronson or Astor)
Post by: callbrian on Saturday 06 May 17 23:36 BST (UK)
Hi
I have been researching the above for a friend, he is a bit of a mystery. I have found almost all there is to know about him and his family except for where he died.
He married Laura R M F Sampson as Sydney Aronson and Astor in 1917, marriage certificate detail obtained. He was born Prestwich, Manchester, England 1895.
They had 3 children, Ronald, Elmore & Dolores. They travelled extensively between South and North America, Mexico and South Africa. This is all known including his naturalisation in the USA.
His wife and 2 children are known are accounted for but Dolores "Lola" b 15 Aug 1928 in Mexico remains another mystery.
Any possible deaths for either Sydney or Dolores would be appreciated.
regards
Brian

Hi Brian,

Knowing their last 'live sightings' would have been a useful to narrow things down  ;) ! Sydney died 1956 , probably in East London, South Africa - see below:.

1895: For reference:
Born Prestwich, Manchester, England 1895 - Registered Jun Qtr as AARONSON

1917: For extra reference:
His marriage, listed under 'Aronson' and 'Astor' to Laura R M F Sampson (B 1899 Lambeth, d 1968 Poole, Dorset) was in Leeds. Is this the only place you have come across him listed as 'Astor'?

Issue: For extra reference:
Ronald, b 1918 Croydon, Surrey (m 1951)
Elmore b 1921 Cuba
Dolores "Lola", b 1928 Mexico

The two sons: have you seen their marriage certs, a possible witness who may be the sister?
The mother: Have you searched for a will or an obituary?

1949: I see, Sydney ARONSON 53, Company Director, with Laura 49 and Dolores 20 all arriving back in the UK in May 1949, with their 'Country of future intended residence' listed as "other parts of the British Empire'. They had embarked in Capetown, SA.
This is the most recent sighting I can find of Dolores, single. Do you have a later one?

1950: I see, Sydney ARONSON 55, Company Director arriving back in the UK in Oct 1950, with his 'Country of future intended residence' listed as "other parts of the British Empire'. He had embarked in East London, South Africa.

He returned to SA in December 1950 and this manifest declared he was a Company Director of:
Anglo African Shipping Co(SA) Ltd, Stone House, Bishopsgate London.

1954: I see, In April, Mr S ARONSON 56, Director, departed London England bound for East Cape, SA.  His 'Country of future intended residence' listed as South Africa.

So far, all evidence points to South Africa as being the place to look for him and Dolores.

Search 'Aronson' in the KAB database.
Record #8 is:
1956: ARONSON, SYDNEY. ESTATE PAPERS.
Source: MOOC
Vol Nr: 6/9/24059
Reference: 3876/56
Description: ARONSON, SYDNEY. ESTATE PAPERS.
Begin & End Date 1956

Google Books Search: Aronson 1956 Africa:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01k2z/
East London Hebrew Congregation: one hundred year history 1898-1998
Sydney Aronson, born 16/4/1895, died 5/7/1956

East London, refers to the African location.  This 'East London Hebrew Congregation' is probably where you should look for Dolores also? Google Search the name - they have a facebook page, among other links.

Also, the book,  also  seen here with some images including one of the Index, which lists Marriages 1932-1998, as well as burial records - so getting a look at the book may be helpful.

Perhaps asking for the mods to move this post to Rootschat 'South Africa' boardd - or if you post a new topic there, ensure there is a link back to this one to avoid duplication of effort.

Cheers

Hi Brian,

My daughter has just show me this.  This is my grandfather!  I am the youngest child (of 3) of Elmore, known as Bill.  I am really curious to know who is asking.  Do please get back to me.

Hi Diane,
My friend is a Hemmings..Laura Samson’s mother was a Hemmings. I will have to check my friends family tree to see how directly she is related. Probably a cousin (removed as they say). I think my first post states the Laura Samson bit.
I have been helping quite a few people, so things tend to get a bit confused.
She is away at present, so when she returns I will let her know you’ve been in touch.
Regards
Brian

Hi Richard,
Hopefully one of the others, who replied to my original post, maybe in touch with you. I know very little except the detail I posted or the info posted in earlier replies.
Good luck with your search.

DianeCh

Hi Diane, my husband is the grandson of Alfred Thomas Hemmings, brother of Ruth Amy Hemmings, Laura Sampson's mother. If you are interested in the Hemmings family tree, I have researched their early days in Woodford, Essex and London, also the family of Ruth Amy Hudson (Hemmings) your great, great grandmother. They are on Ancestry.co.uk under the Greer family tree

Hello Margaret,
I originally started this post my friend’s family is where it started. She is a Hemmings. I have researched her family for a while, unfortunately she has been unable to update what I have found.
I am waiting for her to find time. I would very much like to check my info against your tree, if that would be OK.
Regards
Brian

Hi Margaret,
Yes your name seemed familiar. Thanks I will try to get around to comparing trees. I think by briefly checking they are more or less the same.
I have been trying to get my friend to update for months. It’s getting her to find the time.
I will ask her if she wants to get in touch.
She is the sister of the David Hemmings b 1939 on your tree.
I run a fh class in Cornwall on Tuesday mornings but I am on a long summer break until Oct.
Regards
Brian

Ok! You and me both it took me ages to find personal message.
I think I send one message to myself. I thought personal message was the best way to send an email address.
