My 3X Great Grandfather, Edward Gibson was born in Darlington in 1811. He became an apprentice mariner at a young age and then moved up to Seaman, then Mate and finally Master. I have been able to find little on him apart from a couple of Masters and Mates certificates. I cannot find him on any census returns at all. His wife, Jane (nee Metcalf) is always on her own with the children. The family lived in Hartlepool for quite a while. Jane also dissapears into thin air after 1861. I cannot find either of their deaths or census returns after that. I have been on the search for them through over 30 years of genealogical research. Can anyone help ?????

If Edward was at sea when the census was taken, he wouldn't be on it.

There are details of your man's sea service, 1845-1851 Ticket number 169430, on Find my Past.
If you need help interpreting the numbers, just shout.
