I am trying to locate details of Thomas Dumbrell on the 1871 census for the Farnham, Surrey, area. He died in the workhouse aged 53 in May 1871, but I should like to trace his place of birth from the census a few weeks before.
If anyone can help, I should be very grateful.

Message for Topsy
Thanks for the information on the Dumbrell occurrences in Surrey in the 1871 census.
I have since learnt that the name was mis-transcribed as Thomas Dumbell, and he was at Aldershot (RG10/816/43/11). If you have the details of this entry, I should be very pleased.

Sorry but the only details available at the moment are:
Name Age in 1871 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island
Thomas Dumbell 43 Kent, England Lodger Aldershot Hampshire
Not much help I'm afraid.

Thank you, anyway, Topsy, for your very prompt reply.

no problem. I'd have only been digging up dead people anyhow.
In case you are interested there were quite a few Thomas Dumbells around.

Thanks, Topsy
Any info. you have on the Dumbrell family would be greatly appreciated.

On Ancestry the 1891 Census lists 247 Dumbrells and the partial 1901 241.
There are also hundreds of DUMBELLs
The Census Decoder lists 518 Dumbell & Dumbrells. A few too many for on here. If you give me a bit of an idea of where "your lot" were born I can narrow it down.

Thank you very much for all your efforts and information, Topsy. The one immediate member of the family I cannot trace is Jane Dumbrell, born at East Malling, Kent in 1816.
In 1841 she was still unmarried and living at East Malling at the home of John Bookham, who died the next year. However, I have not found out what happened to her after that date.

Sorry but I've checked all my resources and can't find Jane anywhere. I even checked Dumbrill. I'll keep my eyes open and let you know if I find anything.

Dear Sue
This Jane Dumbrell is the mother of the lady I am searching for, but thank you for looking and taking an interest.
