Hello All
I have a presentation cup with the following engraving. -
G I E
5th June 1901
100 yards Flat Race
Won by
John Taylor
He would have been 23 years old. This would be in Glasgow or Paisley but what was the group?
And at age 23?
Any ideas please
Thanks
Anne, in NZ

Hi Anne,
Sticking my neck out here! Think G.I.E. is, Glasgow International Exhibition, that was held in 1901 in Glasgow, of course!
Know it ran from May until around Nov., and it did have sporting events!
Hope this is of some help!

2nd May - 9th November.
A pretty good guess (I believe) - there was a sports ground set up in the grounds of Glasgow University and it held numerous events throughout the period of the exhibition although the few records that seem to be available don't specifically mention flat racing it was a popular past time in that era
This sample from Glasgow University is from much later in the Exhibition but perhaps if you contact them they may be able to provide further information

Thanks Ray2 and Falkryn.
This certainly looks right. Good to see the Glasgow library site too.
Thanks
