Title: George STOUT b 1842
Post by: chelmick65 on Tuesday 25 April 17 19:59 BST (UK)
Hi I am trying to find out information about my Great Grandfather in Liverpool
He was born in Stronsay Orkney Isles and moved to Liverpool to work there, I have found him in 1911 census as a boarder in his son-in-laws house with 2 of his other daughters but then no trace but he is known to have live with a daughter in Liverpool for a while but does not show on the 1939 register!

Any help or guidance very welcome

Neil

He had probably passed away by 1939 or he would be a grand age of 97!

Have you looked for a death for him?

There's a death in Birkenhead 1934 - birth year only a couple of years out at 1844.

What were the names of his daughters?  I take it he was widowed?

The Birkenhead death names Ellen Leigh wife of Thomas and Emma Gilbert widow if those names mean anything.

Hi - thank you but I have looked at this and had discarded it! - hopefully correctly!

His daughters were Mary Jane b 1890, married to Alfred George NELSON, Ellen b 1863 married to Francis Henry OWEN (my grand parents), and 4 sons

So still consider this George is not him

Thanks

Neil

Why do say George was born in Orkney please. All the censuses from 1881 to 1911 say born Liverpool/Everton

All the children have mmn as Davies

Marriage: 1 Feb 1872 St Peter, Everton, Lancashire, England
George Stout - 30, Cotton porter, Bachelor, 6 Arkwright Street
Ann Davies - (X), 22, Spinster, 10 Arkwright Street
    Groom's Father: George Stout, Mariner
    Bride's Father: Charles Davies, Mariner
Witness: William Seddon; Sarah Ledwich, (X)

according to the 1871 census Charles Davies was deceased, mother Mary described as widowed. Living at 10a Arkwright Street, though could not find George at no 6

Hi - yes I have traced him back to Fair Isle and the STOUT family back to approx. 1700 Thomas STOUT as a school teacher who moved to Fair Isle (and there are still a few STOUTs on the island today) - even though in 1862 there was an organised emigration to New Brunswick in Canada when 137 people left the Island in one day - 50 were born STOUTs

Do you know where she is buried?  They could be buried together or there is a mention of him.

I suppose he could even have gone back to where he was born and died there  :-\

What about marriages for his children, they may record him as deceased or not in certain years to give us a clue  :)

There is  George Stout born Orkney 1842, son of George Stout in 1851 and 1861 Scottish census.

But still not sure how that connects to the George that for at least 40 years says he was born in Liverpool or even more specifically in one census Everton

Thanks for all the information
Yes I know the census form say born Liverpool, not sure but they were filled in by enumerator and if most in family were from Liverpool might have got through like that

I looked and there was a George Stout born in Liverpool about same age but according to census he did not marry and lived with his Mum and was a boot maker/ cobbler.
The Cotton Porter makes sense as his son in law was also a Cotton Porter

My Aunt is 102 and still quite lucid and says her Mothers family (Ellen STOUT - georges daughter) came from the Scottish Islands

I have looked and the last child to marry was Mary Jane in 1913 and he was alive then! All the others that have marriage records married before 1911 census
Cheers thanks for the thought

I'm now wondering if George - who was with his daughter Ellen and here husband in 1911, moved out when Ellen had twin girls in 1916 to give them space. His other 2 daughters would have been married by then and 'rumour' has it he was with one of them for a few years, The family moved from Everton to Queens Drive Walton in 1925 and he did not move with them.

fair enough - not the sort of thing a living person would make up and it was not uncommon for enumerators to get it wrong especially in Liverpool I think. I have not managed to find him in 1871. He is not at the address he gives on his marriage.

As Millipede says he could have died in Scotland. If your Aunt remembers him living with another daughter for a few years it seems like he lived for a while after 1911. Not being described as 'deceased' on a marriage certificate does not necessarily mean he was alive but it sound like he was.
