I have information gathered on an 1851 Scotland census of my ggg grandmother Mary McDonald, but I am trying to interpret exactly what is stated as her occupation. It is recorded as follows:
Occupation: 'farmerly Das wife'
Farmerly as in farming I gather.
The real question I have though is the 'das' part
Could any one shed some light on this please? Thanks.

Are you quoting from the transcription or have you viewed the actual 1881 census image on Scotlands People
If you have downloaded the image - can you scan that part of it that has the occupation and post it for us to have a look at

Hi
I've just looked at the original and it is Pauper and House servant.

Is she listed as Mary CAMERON in 1851? FMPast has her occ: listed as Formerly Farmer's wife.

I'm not sure if this answers your question but I have quoted it from ancestry.com
She is living with her daughter Mary mcdonell and her husband John mcdonell

Thank you Maureen, would that imply they separated or that he died?
Would it just say widowed if he were dead?
-
Just looked at the other Boleskine one - it's actually Do Dos wife. the entry above is Formerly Farmer :

;D ;D ;D
Nice one,Gadget! The dreaded "Do Dos" strike again. :)
Maureen
Edit: Can't quite make out her marital status. Widow?

Those Dodos are still alive and well, Maureen ;D
Cam - she is recorded as Wid(ow) in the col on the left - struck through because of the post-census counting process.
