Title: Mary Spencer, Balbriggan & Nottinghamshire?
Post by: Anne Chan on Wednesday 05 April 17 20:27 BST (UK)
For a long time I have been trying to find out about my gg grandmother Mary Spencer, nee Hardy / Hardding. She is described as the wife of Francis Spencer, hosier (born 1820, Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire) but I have been unable to find a marriage in either England or Ireland. (The Francis Spencer who married Ellen Matilda Appleyard in 1865 is one of Francis senior's sons by his 1st wife). Mary and Francis lived in Drogheda Street, Balbriggan from the early 1860s to 1895, when Francis died. Mary was the informant on Francis's death certificate, his widow, present at death, her mark.
The couple had 2 sons whilst in Balbriggan: Wrighthall, my g grandfather, born 1866 (mother Hardding on birth certificate) and Robert born 1870 (mother Hardy). Both boys were baptised in 1876 in St George's Church of Ireland Church, Balbriggan. Wrighthall was married in Nottinghamshire in 1889, where he spent the rest of his life apart from 7-10 years in Ballaghaderreen. Robert emigrated to Los Angeles in 1919, and the 1920 US census said his mother was English.
There is a possible Mary Spencer in Mill Street in the 1901 census, though this says she can read and write. I have been unable to find her death in Ireland or England.
I would love to know when and where she was born and died.

Robert emigrated to Los Angeles in 1919, and the 1920 US census said his mother was English - I guess that she probably came from Nottinghamshire like Francis.

On Roberts birth his father is the informant so should know his wife's maiden name Hardy

It's not uncommon for a person who could read and write to have her/his mark on a cert.

I had a thread on this subject a while back

Yes, I'm 99% sure that 'my' Francis is the one who married Caroline Cassaday, and they seem to have had 6 children. After Caroline's death I believe that Francis went to Balbriggan (because of the renowned hosiery factories there) with most of his children and his 2 widowed brothers (Arthur b1832 and William b1835). Several of these (including Francis jun b1846 - to add to confusion!) married local people, then stayed in Balbriggan, emigrated to the US or moved back to Notts.
I have learnt quite a lot about these people, but Mary continues to elude me. A Sutton burial in 1899 of Mary Spencer, age 61, looked promising, but this Mary appears to be the one married to Charles.

Thank you so very much, Sinann and dathai, for your helpful comments. These do make the 1901 census entry I found seem more plausible, and Hardy to be the more likely option.

I  was really keen to look at the image of the 1909 death certificate, but the computer just kept producing a 'not found' message - not sure whether it is my computer or a temporary problem with the website - very frustrating!  I don't suppose you could give me any more details of what you found, please?

dathai, those links are submitted family tree's.....we all know how reliable they can be  ???

There are no baptisms on the NFHS cd for the children.
Have you traced Francis on the census' after 1861?

Ok it appears Dathai has posted Marys death on the other post.......

Thank you very much for that, dathai.  I am so excited to think that I have found Mary's death at last - and most frustrated at still not being able to see the image.  I hadn't realised that you can now see the images online - had previously bought copy certificates.

With an approximate birth date (consistent with that on the 1901 census) I have a better chance of finding her in earlier English censuses, and her birth. I do wonder, with such a wide age gap, whether it was a 2nd marriage for Mary too?
