Title: Frank Dallas Owen and headstone/service record information
Post by: suzee on Monday 03 April 17 01:02 BST (UK)
Hello
Frank Dallas Owen born in Melbourne Victoria Australia 1912 was naturalized in 1936 in California. He is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery. He died 1965.
Information on his headstone is:
Frank Dallas Owen
Australia
Lieutenant
2 Major Port TC
World War 2
August 29 1912
July 5 1965
ARCOM
Can anyone tell me what the 2 major port TC and ARCOM are related to.
I have read that many US military files were lost in a fire - if I can't find further info on Frank would it be reasonable to think that his records no longer exist?
Thank you  :)

From what I've found I believe that there were many Major Ports. I can't quite work out what they were exactly, but the TC part of the phrase I believe stands for "Transportation Corps". I have obtained this info from this link (https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=MZTUlf2kI-4C&pg=PA435&lpg=PA435&dq=2+Major+Port+TC&source=bl&ots=Ru44FExixr&sig=zrijTiSKqQ9Ld-yZORVReY_RTX4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiB27KWhYfTAhVJBMAKHaZ2DfkQ6AEIGjAA#v=onepage&q=2%20Major%20Port%20TC&f=false) which you might like to read at your leisure.

I think ARCOM is "Army Reserve Command".

There is however another ARCOM. Which is the right I do not know.

From Wikipedia:

The Army Commendation Medal is awarded to American and foreign military personnel in the grade of O-6 (Colonel in the U.S. Army) and below who have performed noteworthy service in any capacity with the United States Army. Qualifying service for the award of the medal can be for distinctive meritorious achievement and service, acts of courage involving no voluntary risk of life, or sustained meritorious performance of duty. Approval of the award must be made by an officer in the grade of Colonel (O-6) or higher.

The medallion of the Army Commendation Medal is a bronze hexagon, 1 3⁄8 inches wide. On the medallion is an American bald eagle with wings spread horizontally, grasping in its talons three crossed arrows. On its breast is a shield paly of thirteen pieces and a chief. The reverse bears a panel for naming between the words FOR MILITARY above and MERIT below, all placed above a laurel sprig. The ribbon is 1 3⁄8 inches wide primarily of myrtle green. It is edged in white and in the center are five thin white stripes spaced equally apart

2nd Major Port was a unit of the Transportation Corps which managed the traffic etc through a major sea-port.  For instance the 14th Major Port unit was in charge of Southampton and it seems the 2nd Major Port was in San Francisco and then Kobe/Yokohama in Japan.  Further work on Google may shed more light.
