Hi All, I have never been able to find a marriage for my Great, Great Grandfather. His name was Richard Thompson born in 1835 in Sneinton. He was a Cordwainer, as was his Father Thomas Thompson born 1811.
His wife, to whom I have no surname, was named Mary Elizabeth.
I have him/them on the census for 41, 51, 61, 71, 81.
The children, all born in Sneinton, were:
Elizabeth Mary Thompson 1863–1892
William Thomas Holmes Thompson 1867–1949 (My Great Granddad)
John Richard Thompson 1870–
Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
Cheers, Ade.

You could look up the births for children on the GRO index to find their mothers maiden name but that wouldn't prove the parents were married - they may never have married officially :)
-
If this is the correct birth William Thomas Thompson March 1867 birth Nottingham has mothers maiden name of Smith.
We can cross check that with the other children.
John Richard Holmes Thompson June 1870 birth Nottingham also has mothers name Smith.
-
Looks like their mother's name was SMITH!

John Richard Holmes Thompson Volume 07B Page 274 J Quarter 1870

Might be worth trying to follow up the Holmes connection as both children had that as part of their name.
I can't see a birth for Elizabeth Mary

Great! Thank you very much!
Cheers, Ade.

If I am following the correct Richard -it is confusing!!!
1861 Richard Thompson age 26 described as son (of Thomas & Mary) MARRIED cordwainer b Gedling Nottingham (his baptism was Gedling)
no wife present -nor can I find her elsewhere
1871 Richard Thompson Head M 35 Licenced Horse dealer & Private in Yeoman b Sneinton
wife Mary Elizabeth 34 daughter Elizabeth M 8 william Thos 4 and John Richard 10mths
all b Nottingham
1881
Richard Thompson Boarder M 46 Horse Dealer with the Smith family
but elsewhwere Mary Elizabeth is described as a widow and has her children aunt Louisa Gray 46 and cousin Annie Gray with her

Hi Suz, this is what I have too. So you are on the right track.
Thanks.

Is the Thompson/Holmes marriage a red herring?
-
I'm trying to see where Aunt Louisa Gray and cousin Annie Gray fit in but not having much luck there either
