Hello there, folks
Bit of a dilemma.
I am doing some research for a friend, who insists that a member of his Maltby family was hanged in Lincolnshire. He thinks this was around 1800.
Not only am I unable to find such a hanging in Lincolnshire, or anywhere for that matter, I am unable to trace his line into Lincolnshire at all.
Solid in Nottinghamshire, in Souhwell and Hoveringham, where they are prolific in 17th 18th centuries.
If anyone can help in any way, I'd be much obliged
.
Thank you.
Best wishes to you all

Why is he/she so sure this person was hanged (hung?) in Lincolnshire? What makes him/her think this is so definite a fact? If he/she cant come up with any reason why they think it to be true, then surely they can see that it is likely to be untrue (especially when backed up with your research). However, if they can come up with some reason to indicate the truth of it, then whatever they come up with will serve to be your starting point to follow up.

There is no guarantee that the hanged ancestor (if he/she existed) had the surname Maltby.
It is quite possible that a daughter, aunt, cousin, or sister married a Maltby - in which case the likelihood of tracking every Maltby marriage, then surnames of the brides who married Maltbys, then surnames of people who married people who married Maltbys is almost impossible.
Without more information, there just isn't enough to go on.

Possibly a family rumour passed down!!!
A person is hanged.... a pheasant hung!!!!
Thank you again!!!

Thank you Philip....
Somewhere in Lincolnshire there has to be a list of everybody who was hanged in the county, going back to the Civil War or beyond.
Who is hiding it????
And why?
Thank you again... Best wishes

Have you seen the book Hanged in Lincoln by Stephen Wade. I don't know if it will be of any use to you but it may be worth a look. Lincolnshire library has an epub version.

A website claiming to have "Complete listings of British executions"

Thank you both for your input.
I shall delve further, and hopefully find a solution, one way or the other.
Best wishes

Thank you everyone
There appear to be no Malbys who were hanged either in Lincolnshire or elsewhere.
Thank you for your indulgence!!

I would have thought that the Castle would have that information. Have you tried there?

Was his name Maltby as there is a Lincolnshire village called Maltby.... just wondered if there was some confusion somewhere.
