Title: Mary Ann McGill, nee Davis, of Bristol
Post by: Andrew RM Hayes on Wednesday 29 March 17 12:57 BST (UK)
I am trying to discover more about my 2x great grandmother.
Married 1; Joseph McGill, 8/4/1844, Holy Trinity St Philip, Bristol. Stated as daughter of George Davis, glazier, of full age.
Married 2; 18/10/1854, Temple, James McGill, brother of her first husband, which was illegal, explaining why she married as Mary Ann Davis.
Married 3; 8/11/1886, Isaac Iles.
Died; 1910, aged 80.
I can find no trace of her birth, which from her ages on the census etc could have been anytime from 1823-31. Her birth is variously given on the census as Kent Sussex, London and Bristol!

If she married first in 1844 of full age then birth year should be your earliest estimate 1823 at the latest to make her 21 in 1844.

Any possibles for her in 1841 with or without a father George glazier?

Just a transcription but the 1854 marriage has father George Davis.

It's a pity she has so many birthplaces  :-\

Thank you all for your responses.
I'll look into the possibility of a Bath connection.
Her father was also named as a plasterer in one reference, which might tie into this.
I did look for entries in the 1841 Census, but there were just too many Marys, daughters of George Davies.
She did indeed list her father as George on the occasion of all three marriages.
Marriage 2 was to a fisherman, they had issue, but I failed to find the husband's death or burial.
James Herbert McGill was my 2x great grandfather.

Hayley,
Thank you for your reply.
If you could supply further details I would be very grateful.
As a quid pro quo I can supply details of Mary's offspring by her first two marriages. (My much loved grandfather, George McGill,  was the son of James Thomas McGill, Born 6th February 1862, mother stated as Mary Anne McGill, late McGll, formerly Davis - which rather spells it out).
This has been a rather frustrating brick wall.
The Bristol urban proletariat are not so easy to pin down. The McGills go back to a Glaswegian sailor who jumped ship at Bristol in 1793.
In contrast I have been able to trace multiple lines of descent of his spouse, who came from a small Somerset town, back to the 16th century.
regards
Andrew
