Title: Mystery place Barmouth
Post by: skyblueFF on Wednesday 29 March 17 11:19 BST (UK)
Could any kind person identify the place in this painting by J Carter.  I suspect the unusual round building may be a smoke house.

Good afternoon,

If it wasn't for the fact it has a window and possibly two floors I would have said pottery kiln. It looks very similar to the one on the old site of Henry Watsons pottery in Suffolk.

The range of kitchen ware labelled as "Charlotte Watsons" used to be made there before they relocated to Portugal due to costs.

Many thanks

I Googled Watsons Pottery and it seems we actually have a piece.

I'm not sure how the picture is showing, for some reason it has to be scrolled to see it all. I don't know how that came about.

I feel the cliffs rule out Suffolk and I think it has a Scottish feel about it.

Regards

Michael

It looks coastal. The poles possibly for drying/repairing fishing nets (as well as hanging washing).
The round building could be for drying/curing/smoking fish.
The single storey building is typical of Ireland.

Do you know anything about J Carter? Is the picture signed & dated? Anything on the reverse?

BTW it's a lovely pic.....

Yes I thought along the same lines. Thanks

I can't find out anything about J Carter. He or she is very competent.

Joseph Carter 1885-1968 was a landscape artist. Quite a lot of his work was of Old St Ives, Cornwall

Thank you.  Sadly it's not my picture but I love that style.

Further to Ellenmai's Cornwall clue, there is a "roundhouse" at Sennen Cove thought I don't think this is the place depicted in the painting.

Thanks!  The picture on that website is very much the same style.

It is a possibility though.

It looks similar to Ty Crwn Roundhouse Prison in Barmouth Wales. There is a rocky outcrop behind it too, though I haven't found a photo taken from the exact angle of the painting so am unsure if this is the place.

Have you ever had the picture out of the frame Michael? Wondering if there is anything on the back of the actual picture (rather than the back of the frame or mounting)?

Well spotted Ruskie I should have known that one as I have been to Barmouth often enough :-\
Is it an original watercolour or Print?

Thank you all so much. My friend will be thrilled to know where it is and a little about the artist.
He's had the picture for about 30 years!
Warm regards

It is a really good place for an old fashioned sand, sea and mountain holiday Ruskie and not too far from the Portmeirion village famous as the location for The Prisoner TV series. ;D

Very similar to one in Fremantle Australia designed by Henry Willey Revely.

The same only different I think David.  ;)
No pointy roof, a lot bigger, built 100 years later, hexagonal(?) shape, no windows, no "chimney" ....  ;D

It's nice though.  ;)

Brilliant find Ruskie!

Your mapping skills amaze me  ;)

You must have some patience?

Think I'd rather take the challenge of writing a poem than trying to find anything on a map.
I can lose my car in a big carpark at a supermarket  ;D

Thanks Annie, but in this case it was just a bit of luck after entering some words into google, and looking through the images to find a match.  :)

Hi, Joseph Carter was my Granddad. Lived in Hall Green. Birmingham, and spent most of his spare time painting. The dining room was his studio and was full of paints and arty paraphernalia.

Welcome to rootschat Julie.  :)

Your Grandad was a very talented man. Do you have any of his work?

Hello Julie
Thanks for that  bit of informati.on.
The reason I put the original request is this.  I am a picture framer and a customer brought the picture in to be reframed. He had owned it for many years and didn't know anything about it, only that he liked it.  As I made similar appeals before I rashly told him I would find out about it and luckilly before the day was out I had.
Your contribution has just made it even more exciting.
Many thanks.
Michael
