I am trying to find a connection for my Aussie cousin. His maternal grandma was Alice Prendergast born in Waterford in around 1895-1905. She married Andrew McLaughlin and they lived in Cork until she died in 1983. Any help would be appreciated.

Mrs Teddy Bear, nothing at my fingertip's just now,but be sure you wont be forgotten!

Prendergast name is more Kilkenny on the border of Waterford. People from South Kilkenny would be born in Waterford. Try Kilkenny (South) for more info

Mrs Teddy Bear,New York, McLaughlin to' Prendy

Mrs Teddy Bear.
The McLaughlin,P'gast link is not very forthcoming, seems as though it's a one off,as happen's in some family histories, not to worry will keep an eye out for them in amongst my lot!
Cheer's, Goggy.

Hi Goggy
thanks for that, I am beginning to think that perhaps the lady in qustion was not actually born there but moved there as a girl.

Thanks for your reply will ask my Aussie counsin to see if this is a possibility

Hi All, just found your board, it's great.
Teddy Bear, I'm also researching Prendergasts in the area, sorry no Alice amongst them.
We have found however, the Prendergasts we are researching, (siblings of Bridget Prendergast) were sometimes registered as Pender. In fact half her siblings were registered under this name.
If it's any help, these were from the Carrickbeg area, I think part of this was in Waterford and part in Tipperary.
It didn't help matters to know that Bridget was an unmarried mother, with three living children, (not a mean feat, for a woman living in Catholic Ireland in those days, I'm sure..LOL)
Her Father was Thomas, born 1849, mother Johana , not sure of the birthdate but died in 1918 and is buried in the Carrickbeg cemetery, as is her daughter Bridget.
The family seems to be filled with Patricks, Johns, Maragarets Thomas's and James.
If it's any help at all :
Bridget's brothers and sisters:
Mary (Pender) born 4 September 1870 (died at the age of 2)
Thomas (Pender) born 3 April 1873
Bridget (Prendergast) 1875
Mary (Pender) born 21 November 1877 (died aged 10 days)
Patrick (Pender) born 16 March 1879 (died aged 18 months)
John (Prendergast) born 18 July 1881
Margaret (Pender) born 12 October 1883
Also interesting to note, that allthough, their father was Thomas Prendergast, the marriage certificate, has him as Thomas Pender.
Cheers,
Kit

Hi Kit
What a wealth of information. I will pass this to my distant ( in more ways than one)Aussie cousin as I posted the enquiry for him in relation to his grandmother. Hopefully this will help him
Many thanks
Helen

Another thing to note, My father Thomas Prendergast, son of Bridget, was actually born in the Carrick on Suir work house.
Unfortunately, this burned down in later years, so many records were lost.
My sister Trish went to Ireland a couple of years back, to chase uo some of the family records...and was able to meet up with Chris Prendergast, who had done so much research for her, before she had even arrived..
Proof of the hospitality of the locals....Chris is no relation. (unfortunately)
I sometimes wonder if there is maybe a conflict of interest, when we ask questions of the local community.
My dad used to tell us how many cows he milked before he went to school each day....but the local "Dairy Prendergasts" don't know us.

G'Day Kit!
Nice to meet a rellie,I'm eldest G'son of a Prendy,a Mary Catherine 'm' a Binsteed from 'Ireland',wouldn't you know!
Got a line on them from Cork,'m' into Widger's,Thompson's,Savage's,but not much more yet.
Are you and 'Trish from Tassie' related? Had a look at that site way back, and recall the same search outline.Enjoyed the site.
Regard's Goggy. ;D
-
Hi Goggy,
Nice to know there are still plenty of us about.
Yes, Trish from Oz is my sister, though actually she lives on the mainland (Adelaide), while I'm in Tassie.
Goggy did you come accross any information about a Patrick Prendergast? We know he worked for British rail in England before he died, (1950-60's) Trish has been trying to find out where he is buried.
Cheers from Tassie,
Kit

LOL Goggy, My mum and dad were still living in London during the war. (We left in 1950) Though I'm sure it wasn't mum in the garden,,they didn't even own their own house :-)
We actually got in touch with rellies there, last year, but they don't seem to want to know us.
Mind..there are a few skeletons.
We're really not bad. LOL
