BUT why isn't the same flourish on the other M ?
In fact looking at it again - the surname doesn't begin with M at all :o
Added: what is the word in the next column to "Cheyne"? Same initial letter as the MS surname!

I agree it looks like a flourish on the M, very similar to the flourish on the E in Elizabeth

I agree the M of M.S. is different both on the left and the right. But there is another M to the right of the image which is similar.

the flourish on the M is the same M on minister in the top right. but the S in marshall is what I was wondering about? Thanks for all input!
