Hello,
Trying to date an old family photograph which was taken in Phillips studio Belfast. There are a few threads going back ten years and more in relation to historical studios in Belfast but none which has identified the studio or when it as active. I am particularly interested in when it was operational.
Many thanks in advance.

His death, and a picture of him, is noted in a short article in the July 27th 1912 edition of the Larne Times. It refers to him as well known, oldest photographer in Belfast, and having opened a studio on his own account about forty years previously. This sits well with the 1877 mention of him as noted by aghadowey.

Many thanks for your replies. I will get an estimate of when the picture was taken. It purportedly shows my great great grandmother but she died in 1871 aged 45 and the woman in the picture looks considerably older. Your answers have only heightened my suspicions - if the numbers add up John Phillips may not have opened his studio until after that date.

When you add the picture to the photo board for dating, do also post a link back to this thread.
