Post by: gwen j on Tuesday 21 March 17 12:46 GMT (UK)
Is it possible to find out where in the world the above person was in 1829?

If he was with the main body of the regiment he would have been in Burma.

See this regimental history around page 136:

Hi Ellenmai

I can see that his regimental records are downloadable from TNA as part of a larger record consisting of two enormous PDF files - presumably you have looked at those. If so which of the two is it, and can you tell us the relevant page numbers ?

OK got it - page 248 of Part 1.

No legitimate children, one marriage only (Georgina Wagstaff in 1839)

Nothing as complicated as that Shaun, I just searched for him on FindMyPast military records and with a name like Lascelles it was simple. There are quite a few other records for him ;D

I suspect that Gwen is interested in daughter Fanny born in Canterbury circa 1829/30

Hi Shaun, Got it in one! Fanny Lascelles was my Great Great Grandmother. She married Barnett Ford in Cochin in 1845. Census records says she was born in Canterbury . Her marriage records gives Edmund Wilson Lascelles as her father - no mention of her Mother. Georgiana Sarah Lascelles died in Cochin in March 1845. I recently made contact with a distant relative who has a great deal of info on this family which includes pictures. Info on the reverse of some states that Fanny's Mother was Sarah Georgiana Guildford and that Fanny was one of twins, the other child being Julia who died in 1830. There was also a son born but didn't survive. There is a birth record for twins Ann and Julia for Oct 1829 to a Georgiana and Richard Wagstaff. Edmund's marriage cert gives Georgiana Wagstaff's father a Richard! You can see where I'm coming from! The Marriage in Dowlais in 1839 coincides with the regiment being in Newport Chartists Uprising. Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi Shaun, where did you see this reference to him not having legitimate children? If Fanny was a "True" daughter born before he married in 1839 would he not acknowledge her and say he had no legitimate children? Or maybe he wasn't her birth father at all!

It's in the army record which is available free of charge from the National Archives (as previously referenced ) and also on FindMyPast (as Ellenmai discovered).

Marrying the mother of an illegitimate child would not have made the child legitimate in law.

Thanks Shaun, I think this might be one family mystery that remain unsolved!

ShaunJ, This was one of my early posts as a RootsChat member! So if Fanny wasnt Edmunds legitimate daughter would she have been able to use his name?
