I wouldn't hesitate in getting in touch to let them know about the broken link just to be sure they don't auto renew!

...... but even so, another "sorry, an error occurred" message has popped up!

Thanks so much!

Many thanks :)

Subscribed 15 minutes ago, unticked the auto renewal box, went back to have another look found the auto renew box ticked, will have to keep an eye on it.

Same thing has happened to me. I'll try again tomorrow. Keep getting an error message.

Had a message to untick the auto renew box 5 days before expiry date

Looks like they may be hoping you (we) will forget to do it.
-
Have stuck a note on the corner of my screen to remind me
-
Usually after un-ticking auto renewal, you generally have to click on 'save' or 'update' or whatever words they are using at the moment. They intentionally make it tricky in the hope that you will mess up. Sneaky. ::)
-
Odd ... I am getting a message telling me that the discount code is not working. :-\
Did everyone enter the code exactly as Frank wrote it? :-\
Added: I managed to subscribe via the .com.au site through clicking on an ad. (I had previously been trying to sign up on .co.uk which is what I usually do.) Still odd, but no matter. :)
-
I think I've been given a subscription and being charged now when i only wanted a trial and i had untucked the box ...That's a scam in my books
-
Got the same message, gave up in the end.

The cost of the monthly subscription changes from 9.95 to $1 or £1 once you enter the code.
Contact them and explain that you entered the code and you thnk you have mistakenly been charged the full amount. They should be understanding as it is a currently advertised discount code.
-
They should be understanding as it is a currently advertised discount code.
I think in the recent past they've started to limit the number of £1 subs they would sell. I have a vague recollection of this happening the end of last year from memory, in the case of the UK site that may have happened. May explain why it is still working on the Australian site but not the UK one. Bit cheeky if they are advertising an end date. :-\
-
I just purchased 1 month for Au$1 on the Australian site, I did observe that there are 2 ways to enter the code, one worked, one didn't. The one that one didn't work was when I didn't press the Apply button and used the option "Click here if you have a voucher code".

-
I was (finally) able to get the £1 offer through U.K. site.
1st try- used debit card, message came up to verify transaction (£1) with bank (this usually involves putting in 3 random letters or numbers from my password but this time it went to screen saying to phone my bank)- transaction declined
2nd try- used credit card, message came up saying price was £9.95 although only difference to 1st time was different card
Then got an email saying I'd updated my account (after 2 emails saying transactions didn't go through)
3rd try- finally worked with credit card at £1
Each time I've gone in to use it I've looked at auto-renewal option in my account and un-checked that box & rec'd message asking if I really want to do so but each time I come back the auto-renewal box is checked >:(

I think FindMyPast automatically detects which country you are in and directs you to that site. I generally change it to .co.uk and in the past I have always been able to successfully use the voucher codes and pay the £1. Not this time - there may be some truth in them limiting £1 subscriptions, but it is unwise of them to do so because people get annoyed and are less likely to consider FindMyPast for a full subscription.
Whenever I sign up I generally email to check that I have successfully unticked autorenew. I have received some odd messages from them which did not inspire confidence. It's worth sending an email to confirm if unsure about anything.
-
I've kept logging in and out of FindMyPast and checking my details, the "Auto Renew" box has remained unchecked throughout :)
The problem looks to have been sorted.
Frank.

That was happening to me this morning. ::)
When I scrolled to the bottom of the page with the message asking "do you really want to cancel" I found another box that I had to uncheck to make sure it was cancelled. ???

Each time I also did that last step, rolnora, but each time when I went back and checked the box was ticked!

Thanks Frank.
Just did it with no problems and have checked back twice and am still unsubscribed. It has only been five minutes though.

Thanks Frank I have successfully enrolled today until 19 April. I unchecked the renewal box without any problem

I've just been back to check again and the box is still unticked so I think it's resolved. :)
Are you sorted now aghadowey?
-
I'm still getting an error message and the box remains ticked.
-
I don't seem able to work this.
Could it be because I've had a subscription in the past and my name or password is stored and can't be re-used?
Can someone please tell me the procedure for signing up for this offer?
-
I think Frank said this offer finishes on the 22nd.
I don't know If that is the 22nd am or midnight maybe, so depending whereabouts in the world you are, it may have finished.
I was unable to sign up using the code entered into the code box, which is how it is usually done. I just happened to see an ad on my computer which I clicked on, and the discount was applied that way.
Others seem to have had varied success using the discount code, so for some reason it does not seem to work for some of us.
I hope someone can work ou through this step by step before the offer finishes. :-\
These discounts still apply if you have had previous subscriptions or other discounted offers.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
-
After days trying to register the code without success, today it finally worked after I contacted FindMyPast to tell them of the problem.
-
I have subscribed to uk site (as normal) with no problems (using the 'enter code' choice) which automatically came up as £1.
Ruskie,
I think the time/date will be that of whichever country you subscribe from/to i.e. midnight in that country on 22 March?
Annie
-
Yes, I think that is usually the case Annie. I hope Hugh manages to sign up - it's very frustrating being led around in circles which is what happened with me .... :-\
-
Probably a 'traffic jam' ::)
People like me leaving it until last minute to stretch out the usage time?
No point in me (personally) subscribing before tonight as I would have lost too many hrs of availability time until it runs out ;)
Annie
-
Yes, that's possible.
(I was going to do the same (leave it till the last minute). :) )
-
It works! It works! Thanks Ruskie and others.
"Voucher code" was the magic word -- I didn't think I had a voucher.
-
I wish cancelling auto renew would work. Has anyone found a fix? I signed out and deleted FMPs cookies - still no joy.
-
If you go back through this thread you should find a link to help you choose not to renew.
-
I seem to remember it was something like managing my account,
and then personal details rather than account details
where the auto-renew tick box is to be found.
But check again before the sub expires, that it's still unticked!
-
I got it thank you Frank :) :)
-

I managed to cancel the auto renew, when you untick the box it takes you to another page which is trying to persuade you not to untick the box. You have to go right down the page to find a button to click that confirms that you don't want to auto renew. Hope that makes sense :) :)

I kept trying that over and over again at the start but each time I logged back in the box was again ticked.
-
No. It goes straight to an error page. I've unticked and then had the message do I really want to untick (or whatever it is) on another occasion when the box stayed unticked.
I've noted the date when the £1 sub expires, but hope I don't overlook it.
-
I received an email straight away which said something like I had changed my personal details - nothing untoward just that I had a different subscription etc and it shows that I do not want to renew. I am saving that.
-
I got that message as well Heywood, all is ok at the moment, touch wood.
-
Glad you managed to get it sorted Hugh. :)
Yes, you need that confirmation email, otherwise I think you should assume you will be charged full price next month.
I would email FindMyPast help and tell them (clearly) that you do NOT want to autorenew and you are unable to get the box to stay ticked. See if they can sort it out for you rather than hope for the best in a month's time.
They are usually good with getting back to you, though sometimes I think they get a bit confused, which is why I advised making it very clear what you want. ;) (I've had to re confirm this kind of thing with a couple if different people in the past)
Good luck.
-
Do they offer this value frequently or was this a one off?

A few times each year it seems, but l quite often have hassle with it.

If you want to continue from the latest FindMyPast month for a quid, now it's two months for under a fiver
For a limited time, you can enjoy 15% off your second month with us, and as an added bonus we’ll thrown in your third month for free*. That’s a saving of over 50% on the normal price for the next two months.
Month 1 - Expires on [my £1 expiry date]
Month 2 - £8.46 (15% off the normal price of £9.95)
Month 3 - FREE
which will make a total of £10.46 for 4 months so far this year
As opposed to the £64 annual sub they didn't want to offer as they don't intend to offer such deep discounts any more.
Daft.
-
You seem to have been offered a much better deal than me :-\
MY £1 (note this was from UK site and in pounds sterling) expired 1 June (yesterday)
This morning (sent just after midnight) there's a new email- renewal at 9.95 Euros (no discount mentioned) from FindMyPast.ie even though I am in the UK, have a UK email address, paid £1, etc. ::)
-
Just to say I used the July £1 offer and unticked the renew box. Only to have been charged for a months Worlds sub, that I neither wanted or asked for. I have unticked the box again and sent them a message.....so buyer beware ::)
Edited
Ok I see my problem , it is not a simple case of unticking a box, you need to confirm, more fool me ???

Oh dear!! :'( Hopefully if you get really mad with them they will refund the charge.
-
Due to end tomorrow...box still unticked.
Annie
-
Have I missed the boat with this one?
I just tried entering the code; which I think expires on the 31st July 2017? However, the Site doesn't recognise it?
Romilly :(

Watch out Annie my box was also unticked until it wasn't :-\

I am beginning to wonder about FindMyPast. I thought they were a reputable establishment (as far as any are these days!) but their recent shenanigans have me a bit worried:
- this nefarious ticking of boxes and then wanting confirmation to opt out is of doubtful integrity and why I've never joined A
- all these free offers for non subscribers are an insult to us fools who actually pay. I emailed them last time to say as much and to suggest they add on the total number of free days to our subscriptions - went down like a lead balloon. Apparently I should have taken advantage of access to Irish records which were on offer for free. I don't have any Irish ancestors!!
- this heralding of new PRs from 6 counties that we had at the start of summer. So far, I think we've had 3 counties but they are transcriptions, not digital images, and - I am informed - are already available on A or other sites.
- on offer from yesterday were some Staffordshire memorial inscriptions. I searched for my great grandparents and found them both, clicked on and was taken to a Birmingham genealogical site where I was expected to pay £3 each to see them! I pay a subscription to FindMyPast : I don't expect to have to then pay again! Needless to say, I didn't!
My sub isn't up for renewal until later in the year but I am giving it very careful thought!!
Why does everyone try to take you for an idiot these days? >:(
-
I had free days added to my subscription - offered by FindMyPast, rather than my asking for them.
The transcriptions for MIs from the FHS and the charge of £3 is for the complete CD covering the church/cemetery, rather than an individual record.
-
I had free days added to my subscription - offered by FindMyPast, rather than my asking for them.
In that case, I'll add another gripe - inconsistency! Why do you get offered those extra days and I don't?
The transcriptions for MIs from the FHS and the charge of £3 is for the complete CD covering the church/cemetery, rather than an individual record.
I checked - you're right. However, I'd still be paying over and above my FYP sub and may not want the whole CD anyway!
I joined when they brought out the excellent digital images of Yorkshire PRs and I know its all a lot more than we would have got access to a few years back but I just wish these companies would play fair. Probably too much to ask.
-
The offer of free days may possibly depend on current subscription :-\
FindMyPast are not alone in offering records and then transferring you to another site - Family Search do, as do Ancestry (latest being to Fold3). I'm sure other sites do it as well.
-
Hi
Would anybody know the code for the July Offer ?
Thanks Collech

My FindMyPast £1 for a month offer ending the other day. Everything was fine until about 2 days before the end when the automatic renewal box 'mysteriously' became ticked. Unticked (yet again) and it stayed that way. Keeps happening over and over so it's certainly no accident. :(
-
I too have had a problem with the untick box. After i got my cheap sub i unticked auto renew, I received an email confirming the untick. Halfway through the month i checked just to be sure. The auto renew box was ticked again!!!. So again i unticked. On Friday they took 1 month's fee out of my bank. I checked the box and it was ticked again!!! I emailed them and was told that because i was in the cooling down stage they would reverse the payment.( I was fuming when i read this) This would take 3 to 5 days. The email also told me i need to untick auto renew but they had done it for me. Ten hours later i received an email saying they had un ticked me.
Do i believe them
NO i don't
Not a happy customer.
-
Watch out Annie my box was also unticked until it wasn't :-\
If I remember correctly, having unticked the box then having to scroll down to assure them I don't want to renew, there is the 'UPDATE' button too which saves your 'unticked' box!!!
Hope that makes sense :-\
Annie

It's a standard feature of online forms. You tick the relevant boxes then click confirm.
Think of it like how the search feature works on these forums. You tick all the boards you want to search and then click on search.

I think some of you are missing the point here. I (and many others) have unticked the auto renewal box and confirmed but at some point the box becomes ticked again. We then get confirmation email that it's been changed, so, we are not all doing this incorrectly- IT IS A DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO RENEW A SUBSCRIPTION WE HAVE NOT ASKED FOR.
I have also been sent an offer- again in euros ::)
-
....and for the 'new offer' they give you the 1 month you pay for but you have to tick the box for automatic renewal after that month is up!!!
Crafty move & WHY....if it's been paid & includes a FREE month that should be obvious at the time of purchase as in....
Date Purchased 30 Jul 2017
Start date 30 Jul 2017
Expiration date 30 Sep 2017 ???
I haven't renewed yet but don't see why I need it to 'auto renew' if I'm buying 2 months at the same time ::)
Annie

"Thank you for your email.
I am sorry to hear that you don't want to continue with your Findmypast subscription.
Having reviewed your account I can confirm there does not appear to have been a successful attempt to cancel the subscription I'm afraid..
I confirm that the amount of £12.95 has been refunded to your payment card and your continuous membership has now been cancelled. The funds will be returned by your card issuer within 3-5 working days.
I hope that this meets with your satisfaction.
Please do come back to visit Findmypast at a later date as we frequently add new newspapers, records and features that you might be interested in."
Well all's well that ends well.... :)
-
Still 'your fault' though!!! ::)
-
Huh, - my fault for coming to this late, - but it was a St Patrick's Day offer! And so long expired:-)
I have previously found that when I 'unticked' the box on my tablet, - it was ticked again when I next logged in. (Only seemed to stay when 'unticked' on the main PC). I don't know why that might be though?
Romilly.
-
I unticked after i took up their offer. I got a confirmation e-mail. I received the following e-mail
We'd love to count you in
Dear Carol,
Your one month subscription to findmypast has just run out. Renew it now for just $19.95 to ensure you don’t miss out on our incredible collections, now totalling an amazing 1.8 billion records. You can get a snapshot of your family before the First World War with our UK 1911 Census and trace back households over the generations until 1841 with our fantastically detailed UK census collections. etc etc.
So i was unticked as i knew i was.
The next day They took the money out of my account.
5 days later and i have the money back in my bank minus the exchange rate charges.
Not Happy

There's no getting away from the fact that it is all nefarious business practice to 'trick' people into these subscriptions. I presume its not illegal, but then neither is squirreling away your millions offshore to avoid tax, but it bl---y well should be! I wonder how many people just go along with it and can't be bothered with the hassle of getting their money back?
I'm currently trying to work out what exactly Sky have done with Sky Sports and, given that I only have it for the tennis and they don't now have a dedicated tennis channel, what I'm supposed to do? There will be something in it for Sky and against the customer, I just can't figure out the angle yet!
-
Easy answer - don't subscribe to any of them 8)

Regarding Sky, they have pulled a fast one, and again not illegal but still not right. There used to be Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2, but as from a couple of weeks ago, they have created a new channel, Sky Sports Main Event, and the other two have disappeared. And for the pleasure of this new service, they have put the price up by over £5 per month.

It seems far more complicated than that, Lidfam - in Sky's usual inimitable fashion. There used to be Skys 1-5 and the tennis (that's all I'm interested in) could have been on any one of them. it would even switch from one to the other in one day. Now, they have replaced Skys 1-5 with 'dedicated' channels for football, cricket, golf, FI. Plus, we also have The Main Event, Sky Sports Action and Sky Sports Arena where, presumably, they can place anything they want. They're selling this as more 'personalisation' for us and all just for our benefit.
I had no idea the whole thing has gone up by £5 a month. If they put up prices, they usually send a letter informing us so. Presumably, that wouldn't fit in with this all being for our benefit.
I've been keeping an eye on where the tennis appears in the new scheme of things - and, so far, it seems to split between Action and Arena, sometimes showing at exactly the same time. If you change from the current whole Sky Sports programme, you have to commit to a minimum 18 month contract but I have also read that there is some doubt over Sky's future coverage of any tennis!! Its a minefield.
Like I said, they're all crooks!!
-
We had the letter informing us of this new channel and the price increase. I phoned to complain and threatened to leave and was offered a new deal at what I was previously paying. Football is what I am interested in, and that was usually on SS1. It's now been moved to Main Event.
