I am trying to find out what i can about my grandmother, she was born about 1901 not sure where she was born but lived all over kent
-
Was Chapman her maiden name?
There is a baptism of a Patience Chapman:
Baptism Date 05 Feb 1905
Baptism Place St. Mary's, Ash, Surrey, England
Father Joseph Chapman
Mother Kate Chapman
-
Who did your grandmother marry?
Do you have a copy of her marriage cert showing her fathers name?
-
Did she marry William Yelding in 1939?
No she didn't. Death reg for Patience Yelding shows birth 1918
-
A Patience Chapman b 9.10.1901 died 1976 in Kent - is that her?
If so - as Groom has asked - was Chapman her married name or her maiden name?
-
Hi and welcome to RootsChat....There is a tree on Ancestry for a Patience Chapman matching the dates that Carole gives who had Six children all with the surname Chapman.

In which case Carole needs to start looking for a Patience Something marrying an Anything Chapman. If she looks up the children's' names on the GRO indexes she might get lucky and find out Patience's maiden name.
-
There is a father given on that tree and his name isn't Chapman it's Henry Waller, but as Carol said all the children are Chapman.
One of the children (died 2008)
Births Jun 1928
Chapman Edward R Chapman
W.Ashford 2a 1551

As she was born as Patience Chapman and all her children were registered under surname Chapman it would be a waste of time looking for a marriage between Patience Chapman and a male Chapman if the father of the children was Henry Waller
-
The little tinker! :o
Of course if anything of that had been mentioned to begin with ...
So, now we know that her maiden name was indeed Chapman, the death CarolW turned up looks plausible. As does Groom's baptism.

Janna, please can you confirm whether you think we have the right family and clarify what you would like to know e.g. her children or her parents?
If she is the one born 1901 and baptised with parents Joseph and Kate in 1905, you should be able to find her in the 1911 census and possibly the 1939 register. Unfortunately, due to the terms of the sites where that information can be found, we are not allowed to give you information from there.

This looks a good possible for Henry Waller's death
Henry Charles Waller
Birth 10 Jan 1900
Date: Apr 1991
Age at Death: 91
Canterbury Kent
Volume: 16 Page: 329

According to the 1911 census, Joseph and Kate with 1905 Patience are in Suffolk, so that seems a bit less likely. However, I have found a family in Deptford (Kent) with a Katherine Patience born 1903 and a hoard of kids plus Chapman grandparents. Grandma C is Katherine, father is Charles John, mother isn't home that night.

Looks as if that one died unmarried as well
Catherine Patience Chapman
Birth Date: 28 Feb 1903
Death: Apr 1984
Age at Death: 81
Bexley Kent
Volume: 11

I think we could be second guessing until Janna comes back and confirms whether or not we are on the right track.
-
Katherine Patience is in Lewisham in 1939 with what looks to be all her sibs, no kids, so in light of Groom's posts also unlikely.
-
If 1901 birthdate is correct then I think I've found her on last census born Beddingham, Sussex - think we are dealing with travellers with this one as abode was a tent.
The Patience who was a daughter of Joseph and Kate in Surrey (birth Dec.qtr.1904 Guildford) was actually born 23/10/1904 and baptised, as stated already. in 1905. This Patience went on to marry a Joseph Trigwell.
It doesn't look as Patience Chapman born 9/10/1901 had her birth registered as cannot find in birth index. As stated above, shown to have been born in Beddingham, Sussex.
The online tree is quite detailed regarding her children, and states her own parents as a Matty Coates and 'Polly' Chapman (believe she was Mary Ann Chapman). It appears that Mary Ann (Polly) wasn't married to Mr. Coates either as she was a Chapman. Having stated the names of her parents as Matty Coates and 'Polly' Chapman the owner of the tree has then linked Patience to the 1905 baptism in Surrey who was, as already stated, dau. of Joseph/Kate.
So, if the OP's Patience is indeed the one born 9/10/1901 then she was born in Sussex and from things looked at so far seems to be from a travelling family.
In that case, maybe this will need to be moved to the 'Travellers' board which might yield more results.

Well done, Annette, that does make far more sense.
-
Groom - this does indeed seem to be the right Patience from a travelling family. Yesterday OP left a comment on a 10 year old post and was advised by Treetotal that she was unlikely to get a response.
Janna59 responded to that at 08.06 this morning but has made no comment here where lots of activity has been happening on her behalf!!

I believe that this has strong possibilities as I looked at this one last night and the Head of house, Joseph was a Hawker and the family were living in a caravan...Jan says on her other posts that the family were travellers.
Jan...if you want our help then you need to respond in order that we don't waste time going down the wrong route.

Treetotal - the family you mention are not living in a caravan on the last census, nor is Charles John a Hawker - he was a Boot Maker and Repairer and they lived in a house!!! Think you must have mixed 2 families up somehow. The birth you state for Katherine Patience - she was daughter of Charles John - and the Patience who was dau. of Joseph and Kate was born 23/10/1904, baptised 1905, and married a Joseph Trigwell. The latter were in Sussex on last census, not Suffolk. Neither of these 2 girls is born in 1901 and OP's Patience.

I think you are mixing me up with CaroleW as I didn't give a birth date ???
The original poster gave a suggested birth date of 1901 but that's only a rough guess...Joseph and Kate are living in a caravan with patience born on 1905...this census was attached to the online tree with unmarried Patience Chapman with several children to Henry Waller..but it looks like they have the wrong census attached to that family...so just looking at all options.
I should have read the previous posts.
I think I will get my coat ::) ;D ;D ;D
