Title: Frederick Charles Pope
Post by: overlandermatt on Wednesday 15 March 17 22:38 GMT (UK)
I'm trying to track down what happened to a great uncle born on 11 October 1896 in Stonehouse, Devon. He appears in the 1901 census in Plymouth with the rest of his family then in the 1911 census as a schoolboy at the Greenwich Hospital School before entering the Royal Marine Light Infantry later in 1911.

I tracked down his discharge papers in 1919 stating he intended to live in Millbrook, Cornwall. After that is unclear... My father claims to have met him a couple of times as a boy in the 1940s. Allegedly he was a magician and possibly a member of the Magic Circle. There is possibly a link to Newton Abbott

I spotted another Frederick Charles Pope born one day later than my FC Pope in my searches to date. I also found one that lived in Romford, Essex who died in 1960.

Any good ideas where to look next would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Matt

Have you searched the 1939 Register on FindMyPast for Frederick C Pope? There is a probable match in Romford on the free search.

Have you thought about contacting the Magic Circle, they have a database of members now so they also may have past members. themagiccircle.co.uk

Although I cannot access the locked file, I can see just the one Frederick C - listed in Romford but I have doubts whether this is the right one... The Fred Pope in Devon may also be an option. I also just mailed the Magic Circle...

Thanks.

There is probate for the Frederick Charles who dies in 1960, widow Emmeline Anne, for information.

Added:
She died in 1962, probate to Roy and Maurice Pope.

Yes I think there are two Frederick Charles Popes born a day or so apart - the Devon one is my man but the namesake complicates the search!

The Fred in Romford on the 1939 register has exactly the same birth date that you quoted for your great uncle.

Going by the info on the 1939 register this looks to be the marriage:-

Marriages Jun 1922
HOBSON    Beatrice    Pope    Auckland    10a   493
POPE    Frederick C    Hobson    Auckland    10a   493

If you know his father's name, then getting the above marriage cert will confirm if it is the right one.

Pope/Hobson fits with the names of executors at probate for Emmeline.

Added:
Beatrice dies 1945 in Romford?

Marriage to Emmeline 1949, Romford.

Thank you for helping to answer some fundamentals. I now know some family history for yet another great aunt/uncle nobody had any information about since the 1930s.

After quite a few years, I have returned to the last of my grandfather's siblings to investigate in a bit more detail. Since my first posts, the 1921 census is available but I have not managed to find him there...

What I have learned is that after leaving the Royal Marines in 1919, he had a CR10 merchant seaman's card. I don't have any further information on that.

In 1922 according to his mother's death registration, he was at Crook in Co. Durham working as a fireman. Later in the year he married in the area.

It would be great to know what he was up to in 1921 if anyone can help with the search. Frederick Charles Pope b 11 OCT 1896 in East Stonehouse, Devon.

Thanks in advance!

If you have Ancestry try Frederick Charles Hope on the 1921 census - in Crook

Find My Past also thinks he is Hope.
